Getting Garmin Purchased Map onto Basecamp

I have several Garmin maps which I have purchased directly from Garmin and which are loaded onto my Garmin GPSMAP 64s. They are working just fine.

However, I would like to have these maps also available on Basecamp. But, they seem to be only available in Basecamp when I have the Garmin unit physically connected to my computer. How can I "copy" these maps to my computer's copy of Basecamp so they will be available even when my Garmin unit is not attached?.....RDK
  • Basecamp will read maps from any removable drive, so you can copy the maps onto a sd card or memory stick and use that instead of your device. Or create a virtual drive on your PC and copy the maps to it. They need to be in a folder named Garmin in all cases.

You don't say which maps they are, if Garmins CN maps they can be installed directly to your hard drive using Express.

Getting Garmin Purchased Map onto Basecamp

SUSSAMB....Thanks for the reply. I have three topo maps which I have purchased from Garmin. For example, Topo24K_Hawaii which has three files with these extensions: .img, .gma and .unl. The other two maps have files with the same extensions. So, if I understand correctly, I should copy these three files to a USB or SD card, in a GARMIN folder. Then BASECAMP will find them, assuming I insert the USB/SD card?

Not sure how to create a Virtual Drive on Windows 7? Ref??

Finally I not sure what you mean by Garmin CN maps. If I go to MyMaps on the Garmin site I see the maps and the related Download buttons. That is how I installed the maps on my 64s originally. If I follow the instructions after I click on the Download button I'm given the option of installing the map on the unit or the SD card in the unit. I am not given an option to install on my PC.

    CN = City Navigator
  • Then you'll need to do the same as for your other maps if there is no download to PC option.

As for creating a virtual drive just google it and you'll see there are many ways to do it.

Getting Garmin Purchased Map onto Basecamp

SUSSAMB....OK, I tried what you suggested below:

Basecamp will read maps from any removable drive, so you can copy the maps onto a sd card or memory stick and use that instead of your device. Or create a virtual drive on your PC and copy the maps to it. They need to be in a folder named Garmin in all cases.

I copied the three Garmin Topo Hawaii files from my 64S device to a "Garmin" folder on a USB memory stick. After disconnecting the 64S from my PC but leaving the USB memory stick attached, I started up Basecamp.

When I click on the "Maps" tab it shows the Hawaii map, BUT when I click on that map it throws an error, "Error occurred when attempting to use the Topo US 24K - Hawaii Map Product". I repeated this with my other two Garmin purchased map products with the same results.

Any idea where I went wrong?.....RDK
  • Nope, it's always worked for me and everyone else that I know has tried it. Run JaVaWa's Device Manager and see if it throws up any errors

You could try uninstalling B/C and reinstalling it. My "not quite the latest" C/N 2015 map is now usable after B/C 4.5.1 reinstallation, but I got a notice that my graphics do not support 3D Topo due to not having appropriate GL 1.3 drivers (Win 10).

Getting Garmin Purchased Map onto Basecamp

SUSSAMB.....OK, I installed the JaVaWa Device Manager tool. It did not find anything wrong with my device's memory nor the SD card inside.

I inserted a clean/empty SD card into the PC and used JaVaWa to copy three Garmin purchased maps onto it. Process took a while as one of the maps (TOPO France v4 PRO - Sud Est (Southeast)) is about 2.5 GB.

    The three maps are
    • TOPO US 24K - Mountain North - Purchased 1/22/15
    • TOPO France v4 PRO - Sud Est (Southeast) - Purchased 7/14/15
    • TOPO US 24K - Hawaii - Purchased 7/14/15

If my 64S is attached to my PC, all maps are visible and usable in Basecamp. However, when I restart Basecamp with only the above "new" SD card inserted, Basecamp sees all three when I click on the MAPS tab, BUT it throws the error "Error occurred when attempting to use the Topo ... Map Product" when I click on either of the maps purchased this summer. Those maps entries then disappear from the MAPS dropdown list.

Interestingly, when I click on the TOPO US 24K - Mountain North entry in the Maps dropdown, IT WORKS?????

I'm seriously confused and not real happy......RDK

    Just a thought...

Will BaseCamp read any maps from any removable drive, or just Garmin ones?

Nightowl....Not so far, except for the one map that, as I indicated previous reply, read/opened successfully from the JaVaWa created SD card.

Previously, following SUSSAMB's suggestion I used Windows to copy to two sets of map files (those purchased in July 2015) to a USB memory stick. That stick was not empty, so there were other files and folders besides the Garmin one I created to hold the copied maps......RDK
