BaseCamp 4.5.0 versus Windows 10

I have a Garmin 3790LMT GPS and BaseCamp (and other programs) isn't working for me Windows 10.

I have 2 Windows boxes here. A laptop running Windows 7, and a PC that was upgrade last weekend from Windows 7 to Windows 10. It was an upgrade, not a clean install.

After upgrading the PC to Windows 10 some of the Garmin programs no longer work. Everything still works on the Windows 7 laptop.

Garmin Express is the only Garmin program that still works great on Windows 10. BaseCamp, MapInstall, MapSource, and WebUpdater can no longer find the GPS on my PC. Each program searches but quickly reports no GPS found and prompts me to plug in the GPS. It is already plugged in. BaseCamp never lists a device to transfer to/from.

When I plug in the GPS, the GPS seems to initialize properly. I have no yellow exclamation marks in the Device Manager. The GPS shows in the Device Manager as GARMIN under the Portable Devices, and "Garmin nuvi Flash USB Device" and "Garmin nuvi SD Card USB Device" under Disk Drives. There is a drive letter assigned to the GPS and that shows up in the Windows Explorer. I can use the Explorer to peruse the contents of the GPS file system just like any other disk drive. It's obviously there so why can't BaseCamp see it?

I just can't understand why Garmin Express works perfectly with the GPS and none of the other programs can find it. It still works great on my Windows 7 laptop, but not my PC since I upgraded to Windows 10.

Note that my Windows 10 PC is currently on all released Windows 10 updates, including the updates issued 8/11/2015. I have also downloaded the latest available versions of BaseCamp 4.5.0, MapSource 6.16.3, and Garmin Express 4.1.5.0.

Please let me know if I can provide additional information.

Are you saying the eject problem prevents BaseCamp from working? I want to make sure we are talking about the same problem.

    Windows 10

Ok, I just wanted to make sure you were having the same problem with BaseCamp, since I've talked with others also on Windows 10 and not having any problems with Garmin programs.

BTW, I get an error too when I try to eject it. It may be related, but it wouldn't surprise me either if MS has more than one bug.

Thanks. I'll be very interested in what MS tells you.

I'm chatting with Garmin support too. Since Garmin Express works the difference might lead to Garmin fixing the other programs, if MS doesn't follow through.
  • Basecamp works fine for me in Windows 10 Pro x64, but I also have problems with ejecting. No error message, but Explorer freezes and I am unable to eject the second storage location from the device. All I can do is to yank the cable out. No other USB storage device (including my phone with internal and external storage) has this Garmin problem.

    Two problems?

Thanks. It starting to sound like 2 bugs. You can have the eject problem without necessarily having the BaseCamp problem..
  • On the eject problem only: after I got my laptop running 8.0, when I ejected my Zumo 550 with sd card, the eject window would show 3 items, “USB Mass Storage Device”, and indented under that 2 lines, “Garmin E:” and “Removable Drive F:”. The USB Device line was shown in black and could be selected, which ejected both E and F at once.

Sometime along the way (maybe when I upgraded to 8.1? I don’t know) the “USB” line was grayed out and couldn’t be selected. I could select one of the “drives” and eject it, but then the eject window was blank, so I couldn’t eject the other one, and the computer seemed to really stumble for a while after that.

Then I realized that at the top of the eject window was also “Open Devices and Printers”. So I selected that and found that in that window, the entire device is shown by an icon “USB Mass Storage Device”, and if I selected that, “Remove Device” appeared in the header. I clicked on that and everything ejected gracefully.

So that’s the workaround I have used ever since.

That's interesting. I have several mass storage device. external USB drives (hard and flash) and none of them show up under Devices And Printers. My C: drive is there but nothing else, so I can't try eject there. Given that it's called Devices and Printers, I'm not sure if they're supposed to be there.

The problem was introduced for me with a Windows update when I was on Win 8.1. Uninstalling the update cured the problem at the time. I guess in Win 10 that update is now part of Windows and cannot be removed. However, I was able to remove the device cleanly through the printer and device screen, so thanks for the tip.

    BaseCamp

I'm wondering why my external drives are not in Devices and Printers, and whether that has something to do with BaseCamp (etc.) not being able to find the GPS. Here's another person also missing an external drive in Devices And Printers since upgrading to Windows 10.

    http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_10-hardware/external-drive-not-showing-in-devices-and-printers/97751c51-3c21-44a6-a6c1-bf945eaf46e6?rtAction=1439647211860

If the Garmin software is using the Devices and Printers to find the GPS (external drives) then that would explain why they can't find the GPS anymore. For some strange reason external drives are no longer listed in Devices and Printers.

I tried a card reader/sd card on Windows 7 and it shows up nicely in Devices and Printers on Windows 7. Plug that same drive in to Windows 10 and nothing is added to Devices and Printers.

    Deices and Printers

I haven't been able to find any reason why my external USB drives are no longer appearing in "Devices and Printers". Devices and Printers has an icon for my C: drive, but no other drive. No icons for USB external hard drives, flash drives, or card readers. All I have are non-drive devices and printers. I tried a card reader/SD card on Windows 7 and an icon showed up immediately in Devices and Printers. The same device on Windows 10 shows nothing in Devices and Printers.

Question: Does anyone that is on Windows 10 have an external USB drive (hard or flash) that DOES show up in Devices and Printers?

Start -> Settings -> Devices -> scroll to bottom -> Devices and Printers

BaseCamp 4.5 & Win 10 laptop here, with a nuvi+card connected via USB, plus an SD card inserted in the laptop card reader. All three devices show up in Devices and Printers.
