Data Management - Deleting on PO vs on Device

The BaseCamp Wiki states:

2. Devices: Manage data stored on the connected device.

Deleting Data

When you delete an item, the item is deleted from all lists and from My Collection.
To remove an item from a list without deleting the item, see Remove Item from List.
Option 1
Locate the data you wish to delete in My Collection or Connected Devices.
Select the item(s) you want to delete.
Right-Click and select Delete.
Option 2
Locate the data you wish to delete in My Collection or Connected Devices.
Select the item(s) you want to delete.
Click Edit > Delete.

However, many functions, the most important being delete, is greyed out in BaseCamp with the device selected in the device pane. Why / what is going on / what am I doing wrong? The device in question is a Zumo 665.

With the Zumo series, as with the Nuvi's, the data must be deleted on the device itself. You can send all the data you want but you can't delete it within BaseCamp.

No Data Synchronization - Clean the Clock or Edit Device .gpx Files?

Thank you. I did note this with the Nuvis...wanted to verify the Zumos had the same "feature". The only thing I can say is "ASTOUNDING!"

Manual deletion seems be to a non-solution. If I wanted to "clean the clock" and start with an empty device, I note two current folders, GPX and GARMIN. GPX contains temp & current .gpx and an Archive folder. I am guessing deleting the temp & current files, plus all the files in the archive folder would effectively clean the device with no ramifications?

A more surgical procedure could be to use "GPX Editor" from Sourceforge (or some other GPX editor), and edit the files directly on the device, correct?

FYI - I am new to Garmin/Zumo and plan to map out routes from motorcycle (and bicycle) rides. Clearly, I am still trying to learn the "flow" of BaseCamp and, more important, how to organize it so what's loaded makes sense to me next year, the year after, etc.

Oh, this lack of synchronization, is this a BaseCamp issues, device issue or both? Again, "ASTOUNDING!" Thanks!

Yes, it is, but this is Garmin you are talking about. I believe you can manually delete both temp.gpx and current.gpx and all the gpx's in the Archive folder without problems from Explorer (or finder). I would back them up the first time you tried it, or even better, rename them to *.gxx, restart the unit and see what is now there. The device will rebuild both upon startup, but they should not have the old stuff in them. The archive folder should not have any new files in it. I would NOT risk editing the files!

It is purely a device issue, resulting from a developer decision way back on the Nuvii series. BC is supposed to work on many, many Garmin devices, and it doesn't always do it well.

They will still have the old stuff in them as you've missed a step out. As you indicate this isn't a BC issue thought, it's due to the way data is handled on the device. On switch on it looks for any gpx files, merges that data into inaccessible memory where it stores its data, and rewrites a current.gpx. Note that file is simply a one way copy, amending it doesn't change the data the device uses.

The correct procedure on a nuvi, Zumo, dezl is to first delete all files from the GPX folder. Then disconnect and switch your device on. Now using the menus on the device delete the unwanted data. It will now be gone for good.

I figured I had forgotten something about how the device repopulates those two files. But what happens if you just use the device's menus to delete the data without the previous steps.?

One day the programmers at Garmin will talk to each other and coordinate the code of the devices and the computer software so that they work together. Or we can only hope.
