Hi All,
I am new to GPS so please be patient. I am planning a UK holiday for which I purchased the GPS above. It came loaded with North American maps. I have purchased a micro SD card of 4Gb and loaded OSM Generic UK maps. The unit is registered and accessible on Garmin Express. I have Basecamp (BC) loaded.
On Windows Explorer (WE) I can see, in the Computer's "Devices and Printers", both the Nuvi memory and the SD card. In BC I see the Nuvi, Its internal storage and the CN North American maps. The SD card is, more often than not, ABSENT! Sometimes it's there and I can load information to it, I see the change in available space on WE so I know its getting there. When it is present I can load data to and from the SD card. In BC, if I go to "Maps", the UK map appears and is selected. The same goes for the Nuvi itself under "My Maps" both North America and UK maps appear and the UK one is selected. I can plan trips on the Nuvi itself using the UK maps.
On the pc, running Windows 7, I have planned some 11 trips using Google maps on Chrome (C). These have been filed on Google Drive (GD) and then refilled as .kmz files and "imported" to BC. From there they have been loaded to the Nuvi using "Device, Send To Device". All well and good.
If I open the SD card with WE I can see the individual route, track and waypoint .gpx files in the GPX folder. Chain is <"computer, nuvi 56, Memory card, Garmin, GPX">. If and when the SD card is visible in BC I can see the trips and locations as well. When I disconnect the Nuvi from the computer I can find "NO" reference to the planned trips. I have places I have entered showing up in "Favorites" and trips planned on the Nuvi show up under "Trip Planner". What am I not doing or doing wrong??? :confused:
I should clarify that this situation also exists with the NA maps. Any trip planned on the Nuvi is ok. Any planned on the pc are just not visible. There is data there the Nuvi just cant read it.:eek:

    Routes sent to your 56 will appear as unscheduled trips in the trip planner app.

    However I'm unclear if you're creating routes in Basecamp or trying to send routes created on Google maps? If the latter I don't believe that will work.

    In my limited experience with the Nuvi 56 in North America, routes imported in gpx format in what I refer to as "full stops" and which the gpx file may show as "rte points" will import into Trip Planner as unscheduled trips just fine. If the user does manage to import unwanted "Next Destination" and "Next Shaping Point" coordinates into the Garmin 56 from BaseCamp or other Apps, they can be skipped using the "Change Route" feature, or deleted using other editing.

    I am still uncomfortable with the use of BaseCamp and currently have a mismatch of maps on the Nuvi 56 Garmin Maps and the locked out previous Garmin City Navigator Maps on B/C due to a downloading glitch. This does not concern me too much, as for a week I was without my computer in a distant city and entered routes and points directly into the Nuvi 56 with my thumbs and other appendages.

    Any routing issues that occurred were not due to the created routes, but instead were due to the Nuvi on the road wanting the user to take an unneeded U-turn without saying so. This "go back" routing became less of a problem as I learned not to turn off limited access roads into residential areas - right or left - just because the device directed me to.

    Thanks for your prompt response. In answer to your question we resorted to the Google map (GM) way of doing things because the loaded map(s) and BC was not responding either. The only trips I have been able to retrieve and use have been entered manually on the Nuvi itself. I managed to program one trip on BC using the downloaded map and it made sense on BC. ie It showed the route along the relevant roads. Subsequent attempts to use the same program and map ended with a route being shown as a dead straight line, like a compass bearing, between two points. The program made no apparent attempt to make a track using existing roads and highways at all. The silly thing is all the trips and locations I planned using GM actually show up on the loaded map in BC. I just cant see them on the device. I know the data is there because I can see the individual files on the SD card as stated before. They also list on BC in the relevant lists as locations and directions.
    I have tried to attach a couple of snippets of the screen from BC so you will see what I mean but the system of attaching items leaves me more confused than ever. Please take my word, the files are there.

    The files may be there but your nuvi can't read them.

    What should work for you if you can see the google routes in Basecamp is then to create a route using Basecamp that follows the google route, and send that to your nuvi. Routes created in Basecamp and sent to your nuvi should work, as explained in the FAQ I linked to.

    Thanks again for the reply. I do not see a link to an FAQ in your note. Maybe I'm looking in the wrong place.
    To clarify my previous note, I can see the Google derived route on the loaded map in BC after it has been imported to BC. If I try and set a route as you suggest, using the same start and end locations, I just get a straight line. The Google route is still there underneath but BC just produces a linear route. The only way to have it follow the same route is to make waypoints at major intersections which is a pain in the you know where. Also in Google you can drag the route to the different routes as you wish. I see no way of doing that in BC. Is there a way to do that?

    If you're seeing straight lines in Basecamp you either have the direct activity selected or a non routeable map or both.

    Which map are you using in Basecamp?

    You can rubber band a route in various ways. Simplest is to select a route, right click on it and select Insert into route, you can then place a viapoint where you want.

    I am using OSM Generic Routable (GBR_01-07-2015) and City Navigator North America NT 2015.4. The latter came preloaded on the Nuvi.

    Where do I find the setting for direct activity? I take it that the Maps are routable as they claim. I assume this is a setting on BC.

    Below is the relevant section of that FAQ. Now I am really confused. When I connect my Nuvi to my pc it appears to turn off or enter into a charging state. I cannot access any functions on the Nuvi so how do I touch Apps or Tools? If this is referring to BC touching Tools doesn't open Trip Planner. And touching Trip planner gives the option to start a new trip or open an existing one. I just connected my device and after a few minutes I received a message to the effect that a download was incomplete and I notice a red line from the "User Data file. Am I correct in saying that maybe this has now downloaded automatically, which it has never done before, but is incomplete.
    Also the FAQ says "to not turn off the device or connect it to a computer". It's already connected. Which is it?
    I just disconnected the Nuvi and checked for new routes under >Apps>Trip Planner and the only trips there are ones I have generated on the Nuvi itself.

    To access a transferred route in a Camper/RV 660, 760, dezl 560, 570, 760, 770, nuvi 55, 56, 57, 58, 65, 66, 67, 68, 2400, 2405, 2407, 2408, 2505, 2507, 2508, 2509, 2609, 2707, 2708, 2709, 3400, 3500, 3507, 3508, 3700 series, nuviCam, or zumo 350, and 390 series device:
    1.Touch Apps or Tools
    2.Touch Trip Planner
    3.Allow time for the device to automatically import the trip/route

    The import will automatically begin, but no message will appear on the device indicating that the import is happening and may take several minutes to import the trips. Once the import is complete, all transferred routes will be displayed under a category called Unscheduled or Imported Trips in the Trip Planner.1 Until the trip(s) show up in Trip Planner, do not turn off the device or connect it to a computer.

    First to ensure you don't have Direct activity selected double click, or right click and select Open, your route in the bottom left hand pane. There is a box top right in the Route properties box, if that says Direct select the Driving activity from the drop down box. You can set your default routing profile in Edit, Options, Activity profile. Ensure your OSM map is selected, it should be checked when you look at the maps button in the toolbar at the top of Basecamp.

    The FAQ is about viewing routes/trips after you've sent them to your nuvi, not when it's connected to your PC and using Basecamp.

    Once the route is following the map right click it in the lower left hand pane, select Send to and choose the internal storage of your nuvi. Then disconnect the nuvi (use safe eject) then follow the instructions in the FAQ.
