I've checked the different export files BC creates and I don't see the route summary details anywhere within the files. Any suggestions on how to get this information exported?
Are you referring to the route summary information that is on the top of the route dialog? That information is gleaned from the route itself so it doesn't appear in the export files.
Yes, I'm referring to that information. Yes, I understand that it is gleaned from the route itself, but that's precisely what I'm exporting: the route, so it seems reasonable (to me :) ) to expect full route information.
This route summary does not seem to be calculated on the fly every time (unless something changes, of course). When in Data View all routes display Distance and Time columns, so the data is stored there somewhere. If I could have just those two values exported I'd be happy.
I’m not sure how you plan to use this info, and I’m not sure which devices could/would display this minimal information even if it were present. I’m don't think any of the outdoor devices would even read it.
Anyway, what you can do is enter the data in the Notes tab. This can be done manually or by selecting and copying the last/destination line under the Route Directions tab (make sure More Info is checked) and pasting into the Notes and deleting unwanted information. I would expect that this field will be exported with all formats. It should definitely be in the gpx file near the beginning of the <rte> section.
Alternatively, you could use the Print command under the Route Directions tab (More Info checked). I’ve never done this, so I can’t swear that everything will be printed.
Note to BaseCamp team. BaseCamp does allow users to copy all or part of the route directions and paste them in other documents (this is another option for the OP). It does so using comma separated fields (tabs might be a better choice). However, the program fails to insert field delimiters for empty fields and uses a comma to separate time components even though they appear as a single field in the tables. In short, everything gets misaligned.
I'm not planning to use the requested route info in a device in any way at all.
I extract as much information as I can from BC export files and then print my own reports with maps, route directions, comments, layovers, icons, etc. I already have everything I need from what BC exports, the only thing missing is total trip distance and time. If BC would export that it would be great, if not then I can live with that too, but it's extra work.
Inserting this information by hand in the route notes as suggested is possible but not practical, with hundreds of routes that vary often and therefore get recalculated often. My request is based on the fact that the information is already there, all it takes is BC adding existing data to the export file.
After finally finding the Properties Summary table, it was possible to shrink the full properties display in B/C with the Windows box grabbers using the mouse. Then ctrl+prt scr copied the image to Clipboard for pasting into a photo editor for cropping. From there it should be possible to paste the image into a full featured text editor above or below the other text based trip data export. Or just copy the entire route in image format with both summary and waypoints (up to a dozen listed).
Since BC doesn't export the information I need I do something similar to what you suggest. I use Snagit to extract just the section of the summary report I want and paste that. It works, but it is, in my case, undesirable, because the trip reports I create are printed in different languages and crafted for different end users, so an english bitmap pasted on top looks quite ugly, not to mention that it is quite a job to do this manual work with hundreds of trips. That is the reason why I have to deal with raw export data, so I can then create my own reports that look the way I want them to look.
If it was just for my own use I would simply go with the standard trip reports BC produces. They are not 'pretty' but they are functional.
It's the only way I have of rolling my own trip reports. I use the raw data that BaseCamp exports (*.gpx) as input to my custom application, which parses the gpx and outputs custom files in different file formats. Another custom app adds the bells and whistles and combines the lot into trip reports.
It's a little hard for me to send one of my trip reports, because they are propietary and incorporate Google Earth images, Google Map maps, National Parks publications and maps, as well as plenty of additional eye candy, so they are rather big.
But, I can send you one of my small sample output files in rtf format (without the maps and the rest of the fancy stuff), that I'm sure will give you a pretty good idea of what I do with the files that BaseCamp exports.
Edited to add: ...or, better still, I will explain it with a couple of pics:
I would like this information, taken from BC Data View:
be added to the exported *.gpx somewhere around here:
