Mapsource Maps using BaseCamp

Probably asked before but a search didn't get an answer...

I have several Mapsource discs and want to use the data in Basecamp. I copied the disks entirely to GARMIN in Program files (x86) as Mapsource but they are not showing when I open BaseCamp. This procedure DID work on my other laptop that has just been replaced.

What is the correct procedure for installing this data so it can be used in Basecamp? I'm doing something wrong.

BaseCamp v.4.4.7

Thanks, Paul
  • Install the maps exactly as you would for Mapsource. BaseCamp will then read the maps.

Problem is, this new laptop does not have a CD drive. I have the disks copied to a flashdrive though, maybe I can try another angle. THANKS for the idea!
I'll let you know how it works out...

  • If you still have access to your previous PC use JaVaWas GMTK program. Back up the maps to a USB stick then restore them on your new laptop.

Well...The previous attempt did not work...

I do still have the old laptop but it is really bad shape and barley will boot. I'll give your suggestion a try, but what I'm trying to do is access not my personal map data but want basecamp to read the Garmin map data ie. City Navigator the Garmin topo, east-west-ak/hi.

I was able to get it to go on the old laptop by copying the mapsource set to GARMIN under Program Files (x86) but on this new machine it's no workie...

    ANY suggestions GREATLY appreciated...

Well, this is beyond frustrating. The old PC won't boot so I cannot use the recommended program to aid in recovery. I have sent a note to Garmin but got no reply. It is a long weekend so maybe next week, but Garmin seems to NOT want us using early map data (disks) purchased many years ago. They are making this VERY difficult.

From what you know from reading this thread, is there any other options to get BC to access and read my Mapsource map data?

    TIA...Paul
  • I never used data from disks but as I understand it you need to use the install program on the disks. Are you doing that? If so where is it failing? If it installs then both MapSource and Basecamp should read the map data.
  • You could pick up a USB attached external DVD/CD drive. In the US they can be found pretty cheap on ebay (~$10).

Might have to do just that... as this new laptop has no CD drive. Weird how I cannot get it to load from the external HD though.

On the old laptop, I just copied the MAPSOURCE folder under PROGRAM FILES/GARMIN and it worked like a champ. Not this one though.

If you have the DVD copied exactly to a USB stick you should be able to look at the USB stick with Windows file Explorer and see the SETUP.EXE program. Just launch it and the maps should install.
