It depends on the map you are using in BaseCamp, and on your definition of "course". Using a map that contains elevation contours you will get an elevation profile on routes but not on tracks; when the map contains DEM data you will get an elevation profile on both.
This applies to routes that you create on the map, or that you created before. In the case of tracks it is a bit different: a track can contain elevations by itself (for instance when it was created by a GPS device); in that case BaseCamp will show an elevation profile regardless of the map. When you switch over to a DEM map a track without elevations won't get them automatically, but you can assign them using a command. A track created on a DEM map will get elevations automatically.
