Deleting device waypoints, routes, tracks, maps from BaseCamp does not work

When in BaseCamp, if I delete items the Epix device internal storage, BaseCamp reflects this while the device is connected including syncs, adds, etc.

When I disconnect the device, all is still there. If I pushed an updated route or route that shares waypoints, I also have duplicates of all my waypoints etc. Two updates (while BaseCamp said the routes and waypoints were gone) resulted in over 30 way points because I have around 10-15 each route. The only way I can delete anything is manually through the watch and with all the duplicated waypoints, this has taken over an hour just manually deleting.

Waypoints are also not shared, they are always duplicated for each route, however each route is converted to a track which is not usable since it creates straight line paths from way point to way point that even most hikes wouldn't work with.

When I send a route to the device BaseCamp gives an error each time saying "Routes sent to epix were recalculated because they was created on a map that is not installed on that device." English needs to be updated there a bit was/were but this seems to be where the route breaks down and turns into a severely broken track with direct lines from waypoint to waypoint that span miles which is impossible to cross unless you're flying or hardcore parkour.

Tracks can't receive way point alerts either which is a key feature of this device.

I created the routes using the 100k pre-installed map as the active map, and the 24k map for my region. Both give me this error. I do see the 24k isn't listed as installed on my device although MapInstall put it on there and I can use it. The 100K is listed though, so I do have a valid map no matter what.

This is also after the Epix 2.3 firmware release today or yesterday.

Which version of basecamp are you using? You might as well post this issue on the specific garmin basecamp forum mac or pc...
  • For me deleting wps and routes via basecamp from my epix didn't work, too. But this was already not working with fw 2.20 and before. I am shure, that I have sent an issue report to the fw team, but you should do this, too.

I have BaseCamp 4.4.7. My Epix is being replaced since the GPS/map only works for a second on boot up now. Seems related to after running a custom activity perhaps at high speed or something but the issue seems permanent without a master reset which they won't let me do cuz they want me to ship it in so they can check it out which I can understand. There's an active general support ticket for the inability to import routes from BaseCamp too, but it's Epix specific in all situations. I posted that info in another thread.

Speaking with Garmin one rep was suggesting you can't delete stuff from a device using BaseCamp. That didn't make sense otherwise I figure the option would not be there nor would they give you the illusion it's been deleted only to re-connect the device and find out it wasn't. I'm going to follow up with them on that one....

Epix is def experiencing growing pains in dev right now but not tooooo surprising.

That could indeed be the case, for example the nuvi and dezl ranges don't allow Basecamp to delete data, it has to be done on the GPS itself. I've moved this thread to the Basecamp forum where one of the developers can confirm whether it should work or not.

Cool and thank you. Perhaps it's device specific when you can/can't delete data. That would be helpful to know.
  • I have a fenix set to record tracks as fit files only (visible only under fit history)
I can see those activities as tracks on Basecamp, but if I try to delete them from Basecamp 4.4.7 on Windows, the activities appear again when I connect the watch to the computer the next time. Only removing the associated fit file from the Activity folder makes the track disappear
Only Waypoints on the fenix can be removed from Basecamp without appearing again. I think they go into the gpx folder)
Same thing happens on a handheld Oregon 650 if i set the tracks to save only as fit files they cannot be removed permanently from Basecamp

If BaseCamp can delete from some devices but not others then it'd be nice if it'd just react the correct way for each where it doesn't give you the option to delete stuff if you can't. At least get rid of the illusion that it was deleted until you reconnect the device. After several route updates cuz you keep finding cool stuff to add, you end up with a massive list of dup way points and tracks which take a long time to remove.

If BaseCamp can't delete from any device, then the ability shouldn't be available at all, especially the illusion.
  • Not sure why you talk about an 'illusion'.

If you try to delete data from a device that won't allow it then it won't happen ... and you'll still see the data in Basecamp. At least that's how it works for all my devices.

If I delete a waypoint from BaseCamp, I can do all sorts of stuff in BaseCamp including copy the same way point I "deleted" to the device. I can also edit routes and replace the existing routes on the watch and it will show the new icons for routes and keep all the adjustments, but I'll only see the latest ones. The ones I deleted are gone! BUT if I disconnect the watch and reconnect it all my original routes will be there and I'll have as many duplicates of ALL way points and routes as I made edits to.

So the illusion is that BaseCamp makes it appear the routes and waypoints were deleted from the device until I reconnect it again resulting in all the original items and all the duplicates from each edit/copy/replace event. Again, if I delete a route and all way points BaseCamp shows me they are gone. I add just the same route, and all my waypoints are duplicated and so it the route. If BaseCamp did not let me delete the files or if I clicked off the device and went back in and they were there, then there would be no illusion.
  • I don't have your device but BaseCamp sends data to most GPS in a file named temp.gpx. Once the data is on your device you need to delete that file otherwise data you think you've deleted will be reimported when you boot your device. This could be the problem you're having.
