Routes Question/Nuvi 2595

Hello All,

So I've got a route that I created in google maps. I have it imported into basecamp. I'd like to send it to my GPS. Which it appears like I can do. And have done. When I disconnect the GPS from my PC where do I find the route that I sent over to it?

And once I reconnect it appears as if the file is gone. What am I missing or does my GPS not support this feature.

The reason I ask all of this is because I have a custom route I want to take when I travel to the beach this up coming weekend.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Jesse
  • First start the nuvi, then open trip planner, then wait... new trips show in seconds, certainly less than one minute so half an hour is overkill. :)

Yeah something is wrong then. Nothing ever shows.

Then the route is probably not kosher and the nuvi is choking on it when attempting to import it. If your nuvi has a card try sending it there just to see what happens. Or try with a different, much simpler two point route, to see if the process of sending/importing is working.
  • Yeah I am trying to see if something simple will work. Doing that now.
  • Yeah a simple route works. Originally I created the route in google maps. Then exported to basecamp. I think my issue is that there were alot of points/dots on the one I created. Not sure where they came from but probably has something to do with google.

Here is my reasoning for this. I'm traveling from zip code 18447 to Wildwood Crest NJ. Someone I know told me to take a different route to avoid toll roads and such. The directions are hand written and I'd like to have them in my GPS just in case. However when i just did the trip in basecamp I can get kinda close to the route i want to take. However its still off. And when I go to adjust it, it usually doesn't work so well and puts me in circles and stuff when trying to move the route.
  • Trips for a nuvi can only have a maximum of 30 waypoints, so if you're sending something with more it won't work. Usually the best way of creating a route to send to your nuvi is input the start and end point in Basecamp, then allow it to calculate. Now insert sufficient viapoints to make it go the way you want. If by any chance you hit the magic 30 (I never have in years of creating routes) then note that a route can have hundreds of 'shaping' or 'do not alert' points.

    The detail on number of waypoints is here https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={27edcdb0-0c86-11dd-dc9c-000000000000}

Note when folks report routes going in circles when they adjust them it's invariably because they've placed points on the wrong side of a divided highway. Take special care and zoom way in when placing points on divided roads.
  • I think I have it down now. Been tweaking it for the last 25 mins or so. I must say they don't make it easy. I think it you were able to trace the route it would make it alot easier. Either way I'm gonna go with what I have for now I guess. I'll have Google maps on my phone as backup. And I kinda know the way anyway. This why my friend got from someone saves us some money by avoiding some tolls I guess.

I appreciate the time and help you guys gave me today.
  • Like a lot of apps it gets easier the more you use it. Good luck on your trip.

Just out of interest you are aware there is an avoidance option on your nuvi for toll roads?
  • Yeah its setup to avoid them. Seems like this route is way off from what it suggests. I'm going down with other people and will most likely follow them anyway.... But wanted to see how close the GPS would have been.

Try setting Toll Roads to Always Ask in the NUVI; then let it calculate an alternate route when the popup appears. Unfortunately, you may not be able to cast such a route in stone before you begin your trip unless you start over to get rid of all the shape points from Google routing and BaseCamp.

Add Edit: After experimenting with Nuvi 56 toll road avoidance all across the USA to the State of Pennsylvania, I was reminded that I learned a long time ago that mountainous Pennsylvania road routing is a whole different ballgame from mid country flatland routing. This Nuvi does properly follow the toll road avoidance settings through Oklahoma, but makes the user work to avoid Toll Roads from the OP's start point in Pennsylvania to the New Jersey shore.

Hint: It was necessary to reboot the device a couple of times with "Always Ask" selected to create a route that avoided the toll roads through PA.
