I am running windows 8 and have a Novi 2599. The GPS is seen by the OS and I can browse the file structure. I then installed Basecamp so I can create routes. However once installed it will only start if I run as administrator. If I just try to start it nothing happens. No error or anything. And if I start as administrator it can't see my device. So I set it to start with XP compatibility and then it would start but still could not see the GPS. Any suggestions?
That was a darn good idea but it did not work. Same symptom. It will start only if you do "run as administrator" and it won't see my device. I know the device is seen by the OS because I did a firmware update using the update tool inside of BaseCamp.
Thanks. I have done that a couple of times with different combinations. It feels like a security issue. Maybe someone from Garmin will come along with a plan.
Sounds as the usual "DTP" versus "Mass storage" issue. Some devices doesn't communicate well with Basecamp when set in DTP mode.
How does the device appear to the operating system? If DTP you may have a roblem there.
I don't know how to set it on your device, but search the forum and something may turn up. Several people have had problems with 2-digit Nuvi's, maybe this also applies to your device.

Think you mean mtp, but in any case AFAIK there are no issues with the 4 digit nuvis. No harm in trying though. To set mass storage mode
1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
3. The Developers Screen will pop up
4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
6. Shut down NUVI and connect to PC
7. It should now connect in mass storage mode.
As an alternative to step 1 above, you can bring up the Nuvi's "trip information" screen by tapping the speed icon, then press and hold the speedometer for about 10 seconds to access the developer screen.
