Huge trip, 9000 points!

Here is the situation, i am doing a HUGE motorcycle trip across north america and canada. The map that i've done, in Tyre, gives me about 9966 points. I have a Garmin Nuvi2595, obviously after much research online i've realized that i cant load the whole thing on my device. I did get the message that it was too long. So now i read that i can cut this in 500 chunks! Fine, now i've learned <very roughly> how to cut those into sections.

Once i do that in basecamp, i see the sections into the "My Collections" window.

First question, is i assume i've correctly cut my big route into small chunk, right?

Second, How do i load all those sections into my device? I tried ctrl and highlight all of them and load into my device but then it doesnt load any at all!

I really would appreciate some help as my due date to go on this trip is fast approaching!

Thank you very much!
  • I've made a number of cross country trips in that the entire route is huge.. But what I've found on the road is as you discover things the route may change sometimes on a daily basis to a minor degree.

I carry a laptop on the road with me with Basecamp and all the routes, that each night, I upload the track data from the day's drive, and then down load to the GPS the route for the next day...

Using a naming scheme for the daily routes e.g. including the date in the name in a sortable format e.g. 2015-06-14..... makes it much easier for future look backs of the trip.. Handy for future trips.

First question, is i assume i've correctly cut my big route into small chunk, right?

First, make a new list called something else: Long Ride....whatever.
Cut and paste all the sections you made into it. I assume these sections are all tracks.
Rename them all to things that make sense to you, like Day 1, etc.
Since there is nothing else in that List, they should all show up un-hi-lighted. If you double click one or simply click on it in the list it will highlight. Now you can be sure your naming is sequential and sensible.
Hook up the device and look in internal storage for tracks. If there are already a bunch there may not be enough room. Delete them after pasting them back into BC if you want to save them.
Now select say, a half dozen of the new tracks, right click, and "send TO" the device's internal storage. Verify they show up and open a few to be sure they are identical to the ones still in BC.

IF all this works, continue selecting 6 at a time and sending them to the unit. It is likely you will exceed the unit's track limit, so sending a few at a time will at least get most of them on there.

NOW, if you discover you have exceeded the limit, you can reduce the number of track points in each one by filtering. I'm not sure the Nuvi will allow you to edit a track in BC, you may have to do that first while the track is still in BC. I just don't know the limits of the 2595, sorry.

The smart thing to do is to find out what your devices limits are, then modify your tracks first so as not to exceed the total limit of tracks or track points. The above procedure is a quick way to approximate what you can or cannot do. Every time you open a track in BC the number of points will show, so the arithmetic is easy.

Unfortunately, the Nuvi series is not very motorcycle friendly and you may never be able to get the entire trip onto yours.

Edit: Oh, never mind, I just discovered the Nuvi 2595 will not accept tracks, period, so all the above ideas are useless. I have no idea if there is a workaround. I did not delete the entire post because it may serve as a warning to others. Nuvis + Motorcycles =

Well i managed to get it works, thanks for the tips Dan to name several portions of the trip. It's much more manageable now. What i did is in Basecamp, i redraw my whole entire route! It took me a lot of hours to get it done. I used the tools to "insert/move/erase and then divided the whole thing in 20 sections. I saw a good video on you tube by a gent called Jobyburne. It is now completed and i verified that all sections are loaded, from 1 to 20.

My only one issue is i took it for a test drive in my car, (tho the trip is on my motorcycle) and i had one point closed to home that was very close to a road and a parking. It thought i had missed it! It's too precise! it had me going back to go thru it! Isnt there a way to set my GPS so it skip that point and go to the next? Or rather not so much skip it but reroute itself or maybe to reduce/increase the range where it thinks the gps is?

    Thanks for the tips!

The newer two digit Nuvi 56 and presumably 58 models for US and Canada have an enroute edit feature to remove (bypassed?) next Shape Points and next Stops in Trip Planner. You might want to try to find one to demo for comparison with the Trip Planner in your older 4 digit Nuvi.
  • Also your older nuvi doesn't accept shaping points from BC, newer ones do. Shaping points can be bypassed whereas viapoints have to be visited.

I seldom tried use my Nuvi 255W because neither I, as driver, nor my full time "navigator" ever learned to consistently get past the touchy feely screen's Demo mode menu interface on the road. Once in a while out of total frustration, I would stop the car and reset the Nuvi 255w with its marginally acceptable touch screen to proper navigation mode, just to demonstrate that it could be done. I have no experience with the 2xxx series Nuvis, except for reading issues posted on this forum. Otherwise I used a different brand of handheld gps device with buttons with which I was familiar.

But the user friendly larger touch screen two digit Nuvi 56 with Trip Planner seems to be in a whole different league, as long as it is kept away from BaseCamp. However, for those users who do use BC for routing, device firmware now has a quick means to Skip the Next Destination and/or Skip the Next Shape Point while on the road with a gps satellite fix. BC may add Shape Points for turns, change inline Stops to another category, or perhaps scramble the Waypoint numbering sequence in Direct routing recalculation sorting, so having a little more editing control in the Nuvi 56 is welcome.
