Bizarre occurance when creating a route

I am using the latest variant of Basecamp, and am using Oregon 600. The problem is what happens when I create a route. I record a track when I am out hiking or on the map on my pc a track. In both cases the tack shows up on my map as recorded. The activity profile set up in Options is 'hiking'.
When I try to create a a route from this track I right click on it and select 'create route from selected track'. This works but in the window it shows that the profile is 'direct'. If I change this to 'hiking' as it should be I get lots of line connecting backwards annd forwards all over the area of the route. What is wrong here?
  • All Activity Profiles except for Direct are for routes that follow features like navigable features (roads and on some maps trails). These profiles must follow the features mentioned. If a user point is not on a navigable feature, a feature will be followed until closest approach, fly out perpendicular from the feature to the point and back to the feature.

From your description, trails on your map are not a navigable feature. A Direct Route would be the correct choice if you wish to navigate as a Route. On your device, you should also have the option to navigate as a Track.

Direct Routes are far more limited than Tracks in regards to the number of points allowed. You will have to check the specifications for your device, but it will be something like 10,000 points for Tracks and 250 for Direct Routes (other profiles are limited to ~50). If you wish to navigate as a Route and have too many points, you can filter the Route to fewer points before converting to a Route.

Activity Profiles are a means to set parameters typical for different activities. The application uses these parameters to aid in calculating/choosing a route that follows routable features. But you are free to use any Profile to create a Route regardless of your Activity. If your device uses Activity Profiles, it may be important that the Activity Profile on your device matches that of the Route sent to the Device before activating the Route.
