Can I recovered deleted track log files?

I went on a long road trip and my Garmin Nuvi accumulated more than 20 track log files, so it overwrote the old ones. Is there *any* way of recovering these files?

I've installed and tried to use two brands of file recovery software on the device, but neither offered to scan the Nuvi, so I fear that it doesn't have a standard file system like FAT32.

I've searched this forum for ideas, but couldn't find anything like this, so apologies in advance if I missed it.

Any tips?

And, I can't believe that a device with 2GB of free space would have a 20-file limit for archives. How can I submit a feature request to the Nuvi team to have that limit removed?

With the nuvi in mass storage mode use Windows Explorer to look in \GPX\Archive.

Thanks for the comment. I've done that, and there are only the 20 most recent archived files there. What I need is the other 10 files that were overwritten by the device.

Right, I get that they publish limitations, but is there any way to get around that? For instance, if I delete a file from my hard disk, I can generally run a utility to recover that file. My hope is that, similar to the PC file system, the bits for the log files are still on the Nuvi's storage system but just not accessible through Windows Explorer. One idea I had was to create a mirror image of the Nuvi file system, save this to my PC hard drive, and then run my file recovery software against that. But, I don't know how to do that and was hoping that somebody had knowledge of a process like this.
  • They're overwritten so unlikely they can be recovered.

I've just run Recuva (a good free file recovery tool) on my nuvi's \GPX\Archive folder. One file was recoverable, the rest not, and told me why.

OK, for reference of others, here is the final answer to this.

My first problem was that the device was connecting to Windows using MTP mode instead of Mass Storage Mode. To do this:
    1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
    2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
    3. The Developers Screen will pop up
    4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
    5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
    6. Shut down NUVI and hookup to Computer USB cable

Now, the NUVI will show with a drive letter in File Explorer, and can be seen by file recovery apps.

I then tried Recuva and Undelete360, and both apps were able to see the log files that I had recently deleted manually, but neither was able to see the ones from several weeks ago that the system deleted. Oh well.

Thanks to all for the help!

Now, is there any way to make a feature request to Garmin, to have them remove the 20-file limit?
  • I don't know if this applies to the Nuvi line, but here is a little historical background. The idea behind limited space for Auto-archiving was to reserve a fixed portion of storage for auto-archiving only. This way, a user was sure to have that space available and not have to worry about it being decrease through storage of user files (maps, waypoints etc) back when storage was a premium. On these older devices and at least some classes of newer devices there is a way to call up auto-archived tracks and manually save them. In this manner more tracks can be kept. Saving the tracks will be limited by t available free space on the device (excluding that reserved for auto-archiving). If Nuvi's do not have a means to do this, you might want to suggests this as an alternative option as Garmin may be reluctant to change their current policy.

Is it possible to restore back all logs and data after installing the new software?

    Hi,
Is it possible to restore back all logs and data after installing the new software on Garmin 295?
Is it possible to restore back deleted log? And how I can do it?
  • This thread is about a BaseCamp issue, just exactly what is your problem?
