Basecamp suddenly quit working

Former Member
Former Member
his is a long story, but I will try to be as brief as possible. Any help would be appreciated. I reside in the USA.

I got a nuvi 65 LMT last July. Works great in the car, but I do need Basecamp to create my own
routes, especially for vacations. I installed Basecamp around October 2014 and used it quite a
bit. Mainly, I let the nuvi find the default route and then modify it in Basecamp and save the route.
That worked. I could even use the W. Europe map on the SD card to set routes in Europe without
trouble.

This February, I found Basecamp could no longer read either map -- the built in US map or the
W. Europe one on the SD card. Thin, green lines appear next to both map icons, but the maps are
not read. (They green progress bars used to zip across almost as soon as I opened Basecamp.) After 5 min, but icons disappear. It also 'hangs' the nuvi: it is no longer accessible via Windows explorer. However, if I plug in the nuvi without Basecamp, I can see that it is mounted, and I browse the folders etc. in Windows explorer. Garmin Express sees the nuvi and works fine with it.

I called Garmin about a couple of months ago. Excellent, superb, customer service. Wetried
all kinds of things. Uninstall and reinstall Basecamp, reinstall map, etc., etc. Nothing worked.
Then I got handed to a dreadful software person -- who was less the zero
help.I even tried a fresh install of Basecamp on my
work computer just to make sure that it wasn't the laptop and the desktop at home, to no
avail. Back to customer service -- great again. Garmin agreed to RMA the unit and the new one came today. (Thanks, Garmin!)

But, alas, I have *exactly* the same problem with the new unit on the laptop and the desktop
at home. I do not have access to any more "virgin" machines, but I am pretty certain that it
is not an issue with the machines. Today, I noticed that when I open Basecamp with the nuvi
plugged in, the Internal Memory is read fine -- the green bar shoots right through. But the
'gpmapprom' does not get read -- Basecamp tries for 5 min before shutting down.

I must also add that we have tried new cables (Garmin being kind enough to send a
new one to see if that was a problem). Today, I used the new cable that came with the
replacement unit. I am pretty certain that the issue is with Basecamp, as the nuvi, as a
device, is recognized by the computers. Incidentally, Basecamp upgrades itself today to
Version 4.4.7. It says the driver is gmnusb.sys and its version is 2.3.1.0.

Any help to resolve this would be greatly appreciated. At lot of the usefulness of the
unit is lost if I cannot set my own routes. I do not use the nuvi in the city much --
maybe once in 3 or 4 months. I do like it on trips and hence the real need for Basecamp.

Win 7 on all machines: Home desktop is Home Premium and the other two are Professional.

Thanks in advance ....

You have given very little facts to go on, like software/firmware versions. Does Garmin Express or any other software work?
What does the nuvi look like in the control panel/explorer when connected?

It my be the common problem of later Basecamp versions not working well with the default MTP setting of Nuvi 65.
Changing the setting to mass storage mode solves that problem. Search this forum for the last month for this problem and you will probably find the solution.

Thanks for the reply and the pointers.

I did address some of your questions in my posting.

Perhaps, I should have added that Garmin Express does updates and all that. As I said in the original
post, I did reinstall the US map -- using Garmin Express, of course. It worked.

    I also wrote

Sloppy grammar! I do have the latest version of Basecamp, it appears.
I did overlook the nuvi information. Here it is:

    Hardware Version: nuvi 65 C2p2 A V5 4 GB 64 MB DZ XN TI
    Software Version: 4.30
    GPS Firmware: 6.17.07

Following your pointers I came across many posts with the same issues. I have two
    questions.

    1. If this is so common (the communication problem with the newer versions of Basecamp)
how come no one in Garmin pinpoint it. The (worthless) software engineer in understandable,
but should this not be in the knowledge base and easily accessible to tech support? They
spent so much time with me on the phone!

    2. I did find the suggestions to turn to MTP setting to 'Mass Storage'. The instructions
    I saw were

    >
    Touch Volume
Touch and hold the upper right corner of the screen
Touch MTP Settings (you may need to scroll down)
Touch Configuration and Settings on some devices before getting

    the option for MTP Settings
    Touch Mass Storage
    Touch Save
The device will now go into mass storage mode when connected.

    <

However, there was something about security, that I did not get. Is this wise?
The workaround was to reset the MTP setting after using Basecamp, if I correctly understand
    it.

    Is doing the above safe?

    Thanks.

Setting the device to mass storage is safe enough.

I guess this is why the word "Hallelujah" was invented :-)

I read up on the protocols convinced myself that it was okay
and changed the MTP to "Mass Storage".
The map gets read just fine. Not as fast as it was, if I remember right,
    but full functionality is back.

Now, I am really curious. If this is all there is to it, how come Garmin
people just did not know. I mean, that out of the ten or so people I spoke
to, did not know even after all of them were told that Basecamp did say
that it was "unable to communicate with the Garmin device". Should have
lit up like a Christmas tree.

All the hours and the money spent in shipping, etc. !!

So, to wind up, thanks to BoSandstorm and tranquilo2 for your replies,
specially BoSandstorm for directing me to the right place.
  • Not sure why Garmin Support don't know about this, problems with the '2 digit nuvis' have been discussed here before and a case opened by the Basecamp team. Setting the device to mass storage instead of mtp resolves the issue as you've discovered.

Anyway, glad it's resolved, I'll close this thread.

I opened BaseCamp today and all my routes are gone AND BaseCamp is not routing properly anymore. It is as if it is avoiding all highways, even though I do not have any avoidances set.

  • I tried to move this post to a new thread but was unable to do so, please start a new one as this isn't really connected to the previous posts.
