How do I select map squares to buy?

I have an eTrex 20, Basecamp and £20 credit for Birdseye UK maps.

I can't select the map squares or area that I want because the base map is so poor, e.g. I want maps for the Lake District, but only one lake shows on the map and there's an awful lot of white wilderness. Having paid for mapping, Id like to be able to select what I want rather than relying on guesswork. Same story for Hadrian's Wall - good luck finding it on the base map.

Surely there must be some option to show a more detailed base map - with OS grids preferably? Am I just being dumb?
  • You don't select it on the basemap. Once you start the process through the Birdseye button on the toolbar you get taken to the 1:25K map so you can select the exact area you need.

hmmm...I tried that and it told me I'd selected 2km for download - a random square on the base map. I'll try again. Thanks

You'll find it really handy to have at least a detailed road map of your country in BaseCamp so you can more accurately use it. The Open Street maps are free and excellent quality. After clicking download you get several install options including installation into BaseCamp. It's simply a matter of downloading the file for the United Kingdom, unzipping it, double clicking it to run the installer and then after that's finished open BaseCamp.

The new map will be in BaseCamp but to see it you'll probably have to click on Maps along the top tool bar then click the name of your new map.

Here's the 3 clicks for selecting the UK via the Open Street Map site here: http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/
