Basecamp Options - Device Transfer

I have a new Zumo 590LM. I made a few routes in Basecamp and transferred them to the Zumo. I got a message saying "Route(s) sent to zumo 590 were recalculated because they was created on a map that is not installed on that device." I clicked on the message and it gave me an option to change settings which brought me to the Transfer Settings page.

My Zumo says in has these maps installed:
  • Cnna-Na-Dem North America DEM
  • CN North America NT 2015.40 ALL

Basecamp is set to CN North America NT 2015.40 so it seems like the maps match.

I've looked in the Basecamp help and at garminbasecamp.wikispaces.com but I haven't found an explanation of what the Device Transfer settings do under the Edit / Options menu selection. There is a section for Transferring Routes with these options:

  • Strip shaping points from routes on transfer to device.
  • Also send the original route in case I want to recalculate later
  • Always match route to the map on my device when transferring

The option for always matching the route to the map is checked.

Any help explaining this would be appreciated.
Thanks!
  • I have found it best to leave all options unchecked. Make sure your avoidances in BaseCamp are the same, or at least as close as possible, to the Z590. Having enough shaping points in your route is important to get a true copy of the route once it's been calculated in the Z590.
For an excellent tutorial on using BaseCamp for motorcycle routing with the Zumo devices see: http://www.newenglandriders.org/Learn_BaseCamp.htm
  • Check the mapset name on the device using JaVaWa's Device manager http://www.javawa.nl/jdm_en.html

There have been instances of maps on devices having mapset names that drop the final zero, eg CN NA 2015.4, so the maps then don't appear to 'match'. You can use Device manager to rename the mapset.

Thanks for the tips. Turns out I didn't actually have the CN North America NT 2015.4 map installed in Basecamp. I was seeing it listed because I had the Zumo connected and it was reading that. Used Garmin Express to download and install latest map to Basecamp. However, now when I connected the Zumo 590 I get a message that reads:

    • There was a problem communicating with the Garmin device zumo 590. Please update the software in the device. Communicating with the device may continue with reduced functionality. Please contact Garmin customer support for assistance.

I called customer support and after rebooting the computer and reconnecting the 590, I still had the same message. He told me to try downloading the routes I developed and they did download to the 590. Support guy said he thinks the message is because for this version on the map there is reduced functionality because map printing is reduced somehow.

If I click Check for Device Software Update, I doesn't show the 590 and gives a message that says:

    • There was an error communicating with your device. Please make sure your device is plugged in and turned on. If errors continue to occur, you may need to restart your device.

Restarting the 590 and the computer didn't help - same message. Weird but at least I can download my routes.

The support guy clearly doesn't know what he's talking about; the message and the reduced functionality aren't related at all.

The message might be caused by a corrupt GPX file on the device. GPX files can be found in the folder \GPX; move them to your computer (using Windows Explorer) and try again. Another possibility is a corrupt GarminDevice.xml file. You can safely delete it (it's in the folder \Garmin); the zumo will re-create it automatically.

BTW the reduced functionality applies to the situation where BaseCamp uses the map from the device only; printing is possible when BC uses the map that is installed on your computer.
  • It seems that it isn't caused by a corrupt gpx or xml file, but by version 16 of the time zone map (gmaptz.img); recently installed by Garmin Express. Replace it by an older version, and the problem is solved.
  • Yep, v16 seems to be causing all sorts of issues. I'd suggest no one installs it for the time being!

Yes, I tried moving the gpx files as suggested and I still had the problem. I see the gmaptz.img file (created 04/14/15) in my Basecamp folder on my computer. Where can I get the previous version to try?

    Thanks,

Thanks again. I created an account and downloaded the GMAPTZ.IMG v15 March 2015 zip file. Then I unzipped and copied the file into the Basecamp folder. Unfortunately, I'm still getting the same error notification:

There was a problem communicating with the Garmin device zumo 590. Please update the software in the device. Communicating with the device may continue with reduced functionality. Please contact Garmin customer support for assistance.

I get the message when I connect the Zumo 590 to the computer. I comes up no matter whether Basecamp is running or not. When Basecamp starts I can see my Zumo under Devices and I can see and access the Internal Storage folder. I have a 32GB Micro SD card installed. I can't see that in Basecamp but I'm not sure if I'm supposed to.

If I click Device on the Basecamp main menu, then click "Check for software updates on Zumo 590", I get this message:

There was an error communicating with your device. Please make sure your device is plugged in and turned on. If errors continue to occur, you may need to restart your device.

If I click Device / Device Information, it shows a window that says Zumo 590 with a big picture of an SD card. Everything else in the window is grayed out.

I updated the software on the Zumo when I got it and it worked fine with Basecamp. This problem started after I installed the CN North America NT 2015.4 map on Basecamp. What's weird is I get the message when I connect the Zumo whether Basecamp is running or not. Is there anything else I can check?

    Thanks!
    Ron
  • You need to do two things. First replace the timezone map on your device with v15 then delete garmindevice.xml from the Garmin folder. Now reboot your device which recreates the xml file.

All should then work. More detail here:
