How Do I View OSM Maps in Basecamp

Hi all,

First post here so please be patient. :)

After 10 years of using MapSource I'm now adapting to Basecamp and for the most part I'm pleased. There are few little niggles that I need to get past like not being able to easily sync waypoints (favorites) and routes without creating duplicates.

My reason for this post is I would like to see my Open Stree Maps data in BC. I see the gmapsupp.img is in my virtual device and I see BC perform an initial scan of gmapsupp.img but only City Navigator appears in the Map Selector. According to JaVaWa Device Manager both City Navigator and OSM street map are available in BC.

I'm thinking I'm missing something pretty elementary so any help is greatly appreciated.

BTW, my gmapsupp.img was downloaded from http://daveh.dev.openstreetmap.org/garmin/Lambertus/ and works fine in my Zumo 450.

Thanks for reading.

Tom
  • I use the OSM maps from lambertus on basecamp all the time.

Is your OSM map in the garmin folder?

    Yes it is.

It was created directly by JaVaWa Device Manager.

    The Garmin folder contains:

    GPX Folder
    GarminDevice.xml
    gmapprom.gma
    gmapprom.img
    gmapprom.unl
    gmapsupp.img
  • Strange. Again I have no issue with OSM mapping in Basecamp. Try using Device Manager to hide the map in Basecamp then change it back to visible to see if that resolves the issue.

First, Thanks for jumping in to help. I appreciate it.

I did as you suggested with no joy. In fact, even though I made City Navigator not visible it still showed up in BC.

I then cleared the BC caches and changed the name of the Map Name to "OSM US 0515" thinking that might help. (I'm grasping at straws) Again no joy.

Finally a really strange thing. I have two virtual devices. one is a Veracrypt (Truecrypt successor) encrypted removable virtual device and the other is a USB drive. Both have the same data on them. Now, while the USB drive appears in BC, there is no map set asssociated with it. Yesterday it had CN under it. Yet I can see both the gmapprom.img and the gmapsupp.img data being read by viewng the small red scan bar under the device listing. Under the Veracryot virtual drive I can see both img files being read but only City Navigator appears.

I'm thinking of uninstalling BC and reinstalling or even going back to an earlier version.
  • Sounds like it has something to do with the virtual drives. I run mine from a USB stick permanently plugged in to one of the rear USB ports on my PC.

I did dismount the virtual drive and now, using the USB drive only, I see CN but only CN and not OSM.

    Uninstall and reinstall is next.

    Uninstall and reinstall did nothing.

I think I'll try a new OSM map set using a smaleer area and if that helps.
  • I use other OSM maps all the time with no problem but have never got maps from this source to work. I know the USB drive and path are good as the other maps on it work with no problem. I tried the latest version to see if anything changed before posting.

I have asked about this on the OSM Forum and also sent emails on the Talk-US list but have never got an answer. I have also seen emails and Forum posts from others with no solution.

I would try maps from http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/

Thanks Dave123M. That seems to be my experience as well.

After my last post I used the http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ site to build a map set of the NE quarter of the US. That installed and is visible. I still haven't got the OSM map set to route in Basecamp but that's another topic.

I was hoping to have the entire US on a single map set as I travel often to officiate bicycle races. But I think what I have will handle most of my needs and when it doesn't I'll install the amp set I'll need then.

Many thanks for all of your help.

    I consider this thread closed.

    Cheers
