Nothing is wrong. What simply needs changing is the default mode of your nuvi. It is normally in mtp mode which MapSource can't work with. Change your nuvi to mass storage mode and it'll work with MapSource. To do so:

    1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
    2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
    3. The Developers Screen will pop up
(may see Configuration and Settings, if so select it)
    4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
    5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
    6. Shut down NUVI and connect to PC
    7. It should now connect in mass storage mode.

As an alternative to step 1 and 2 above, you can bring up the Nuvi's "trip information" screen by tapping the speed icon, then press and hold the speedometer for about 10 seconds to access the developer screen. Now go from step 3.

Note the reason mtp mode was introduced was in part to help prevent folks from bricking their nuvis by meddling or even formatting their nuvi drive in error. Once in mass storage mode be careful!

Thank you very much for that info, I got back on my motorcycle forum, where I am the chief moderator, and I have spread the message to my friends. I use the 2797 on my GL1800 Goldwing because of the large screen.

and here I will apologize for the bad rant previously, I was just soooo fed up at the way Garmin's software works.

Now, I have a new Question. Is there any harm at deleting all of the foreign languages from the 2797. In my previous small Nuvis and my 2730 I deleted the extra language files. I have no use for them, as I have no foreign language skills anyway.

. and a 3rd question, is there a maxium size limit for the SD card?

While the address input doesn't yet work properly you can at least do what you suggest without bringing up the full address entry page, which of course is the same with MapSource. Enter the postcode into the search filed top right and hit the search button. That works for UK maps, and from a quick test appears to work for US maps when you enter the zip code.

I have MapSource 6.16.3 and there is no Search Field anywhere on the screen, certainly not "top right".
I have gone thru all the menus trying to find a way to pop it up there to no avail.

Find Places is the only Search Method that I can find to use. and if you enter only a zipcode, it says "No Items Found".

what it should do is take you to that zipcode area of the map.
  • You misunderstand me. I was saying that MapSource has a similar address entry page to BaseCamp, not that MapSource has a simple search field. It's BaseCamp that does and will do what you want. Also if you know the address you can enter that in the search box top right also, see here

Note when you do and hit enter the side panel pops out, you don't need to manually display it first. You can then select from the choices it gives you.

You can safely delete all unneeded voice, vehicle, text, keyboard and EULA files, I do it on all my devices.

    Maximum size limit for most nuvis is 32GB, see https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId={18331ce0-4af6-11e3-f27b-000000000000}
