I just upgraded my Surface Pro from Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 Pro (build 10240) this morning. When I saw the past couple,of posts I figured I should check Basecamp. It was still installed and functioning properly but I hadn't used it in a very long time so it was still at v4.2.5. I let it update to 4.4.7 and it went without a problem. v4.4.7 is now running on Windows 10 quite happily.

I'm not particularly happy, however. Basecamp is still as slow to load and sluggish as ever. :(

    Ticked off user

We are looking into this issue, but can you tell me exactly what version of Windows 10 you are currently using?

    Thanks!

While you are looking "into issues", would you PLEASE make your developers put a STATEMENT IN THE FIRST INSTALL SCREEN.

It needs to state that all Anti-Virus Programs must be turned OFF, or no Garmin Product will install...

I went thru months of pure hell trying to get MapSource reinstalled, it is far better than BaseCamp can ever hope to be..... but you refuse to let it transfer routes to some of the newer GPS units. Like my 2797....
So, I have to install BaseCamp as a cruel tool, just to transfer my routes to my GPS.

I hate BaseCamp with a passion, it is far from intuitive.... I have taken a lot of personal instruction trying to make it work. Why can't you just let us do what Google Does, Enter From: xyz TO: XUV and let the route be created. What is so hard about that?
I hate that damned menu that makes me tab to a different box just to enter an address

And, BaseCamp does something else that I really despise, when I create multiple routes that use the same way points that I have used in other routes, those WayPoints show up in the GPS as
    Waypoint1
    Waypoint2
    Waypoint3
    Waypoint4
and on, and on, and on, it is driving me crazy to see all of that in my "Recent" folders....
why are you doing that? stop it.
I have decided that I will not use BC or MapSource anymore for routing just for that specific reason.
you fill up the history list with a lot of junk, and you don't allow us to delete it from our PC where can be handled far easier.
  • If you'd asked questions instead of ranting you may get some help, since most of what you state is simply wrong.

I always have my AV turned on and Basecamp, Mapsource, every Garmin utility install and run without issue, so there must be something different about your AV program. You need to look closer to home as you're shooting the wrong horse.

Mapsource can be used with the latest nuvis, should you prefer it over Basecamp.

Creating routes in Basecamp is as easy as Google if you do it the correct way, and you can rubber band routes with ease. Equally trying to compare the two is like comparing apples with oranges, Google uses massive servers, Mapsource and Basecamp are stand alone programs working in the main on home computers.

Yes, you can end up with waypoint1, 2 etc but there are simple steps to mitigate against that. I rarely end up with multiple copies of the same waypoint.

Ask for help and you'll get it ... should you want it.

At the end of the day if Google works for you then use it. I use Basecamp with a considerable database and over 10 different maps to manage 5 separate GPS devices, that are used for driving, hiking and geocaching, something that Google could never do.

Hey John, a couple of things:

I haven't ever had a problem installing Basecamp with AV running. That includes at various times Windows Security Essentials, Windows Defender, and Panda. So the problem isn't universal.

I never do routes in Basecamp for the reasons you mentioned and lots of others. I keep all my data in Mapsource,. I create my routes there and then copy/paste the route into Basecamp just to transfer it. Whenever I use Basecamp for anything I always delete everything from The Collection before shutting it down.

Another possibility is that on some newer units you can create the route then save it as a GPX file to load onto the device.

MapSource refuses to see the nuvi 2797,

I have 4 friends on my motorcycle forum who also prefer MapSource, and none of them can use it to work with the 2797.

    so something is wrong.
I am using Win7 with 6 gB of RAM, my full Pc description is back about 6 posts or so.

the above is what my "teacher" was showing me.... he kept BaseCamp cleaned completely out, used MapSource to do his routing.
this guy worked with me for almost a week trying to get things working right on my PC, we used TeamViewer so he could see and use my PC and I would see what is supposed to be done.

even so, it is not intuitive as to how MapSource or BaseCamp works. I detest the menu system to entering destination/waypoints.

Nothing is wrong. What simply needs changing is the default mode of your nuvi. It is normally in mtp mode which MapSource can't work with. Change your nuvi to mass storage mode and it'll work with MapSource. To do so:

    1. Start NUVI by itself and go to Volume Screen.
    2. Press the upper right hand corner of screen for 10 seconds.
    3. The Developers Screen will pop up
(may see Configuration and Settings, if so select it)
    4. Scroll down to MTP SETTINGS
    5. Change from AUTO DETECT to MASS STORAGE
    6. Shut down NUVI and connect to PC
    7. It should now connect in mass storage mode.

As an alternative to step 1 and 2 above, you can bring up the Nuvi's "trip information" screen by tapping the speed icon, then press and hold the speedometer for about 10 seconds to access the developer screen. Now go from step 3.

Note the reason mtp mode was introduced was in part to help prevent folks from bricking their nuvis by meddling or even formatting their nuvi drive in error. Once in mass storage mode be careful!
  • I detest the menu system to entering destination/waypoints.

Not quite sure what you mean by this? You can enter waypoints etc simply by clicking on the map

If you are starting from scratch, and you don't know exactly where the destination is, you can't just "click on the map".
You have to find it first, then you can create a waypoint.

I do not like the way you have to find a destination, you are forced to use the menu system which makes you tab between address, street, city, state, zip.... why can't you just click in zip and forget all the rest? it won't do it.
  • While the address input doesn't yet work properly you can at least do what you suggest without bringing up the full address entry page, which of course is the same with MapSource. Enter the postcode into the search filed top right and hit the search button. That works for UK maps, and from a quick test appears to work for US maps when you enter the zip code.
