BaseCamp problem with deleting locations (Fenix3)

I've spent the last 20' to remove duplicate points I had on my F3 and imported through Basecamp and I don't know how it happened.

I take the points (and courses) from Google Earth and export them into a Kml file... then import this kml file into BaseCamp.
I ADDED a few points... to the list but apparently every time I add some new spot, on the Fenix3 I find ALL of the pre-existing points are exported again. The F3 doesn't seem to overwrite pre-existing points and that's how I have 2 points ok, and something like 50 points which are the same 10 points duplicated 5 times.

What is the EXACT procedure to REMOVE saved locations on the F3 with Garmin Base Camp so that when I import the .kml file from Google Earth no duplicates are created? As far as I tried ... with Base Camp, I deleted them 10 times... but when I disconnect the F3 from the USB and check in the Saved Locations, they are still there.

In the end, I deleted these 52 points and am now reimporting again but I'd like to know what's wrong so that this doesn't happen in the future.

If I add a SINGLE POINT to the GE folder, then export it to my HD and then import it to BC and export it to the F3, I'd like only that single new point to go to the F3.
It is really weird because the LIST in the lower left pane doesn't show duplicates and I've gone crazy to find out what's wrong.

Can anybody help?
  • I don't have a F3 so can't comment on the specifics of that model. However the procedure for Basecamp is that when you send data to your device it creates a temp.gpx file on the device, which at some point is merged into the devices memory (that's an over simplification but good enough for now).

If you then change the data in Basecamp and send it again you can end up with multiple entries although it is, it seems, device dependant. I sent a load of favourites to my nuvi 2508 yesterday for a forthcoming trip to Portugal, then realised I hadn't given them a category, so in Basecamp changed the categories to 'Portugal', fully expecting to now see 2 entries for each waypoint on my GPS, but didn't, the newer favourites had simply overwritten the first lot.

For most devices the advice is to delete everything off the device (note this includes any previously sent temp.gpx) and then do one 'send' from Basecamp, that way you should only see one of each waypoint etc on the device.

Considering the best option for now (it might be a bug in the F3 software because the duplicates have the exact same name for the location and I think it's a bug) is to delete ALL the locations and courses on the F3 and then resend the whole lot from BaseCamp, is there such option in Base Camp?

I select the device, I see the list in the lower pane but if I delete it, when I disconnect the F3, It's all still there. If such option doesn't work (perhaps BaseCamp needs a patch to correctly work with the F3), WHERE is the file with courses and locations stored in the folder structure of the F3?

    G:\ is the Fenix3

In the COURSES folder there's a single .fit file (I only have 1 course right now)
In the LOCATION folder there's a single .fit again which is called LCTNS.fit but there's over 50 locations stored... you think if I delete this I can CLEAR the fenix 3 so I can easily export the whole routes/locations from Base Camp without creating duplicates?
  • Sorry, I don't know enough about the Fenix to comment. Basecamp though isn't able to delete data off many devices, eg nuvis. Deleting data off the nuvi must be done via the nuvi's menus. It could be the same with your Fenix. Hopefully someone who knows about them will chime in.

The F3 is recognized as any HD.
If the locations are stored in .fit format, then the LOCATIONS folder is it and that's the file.

Thanks for your help... I guess we'll only know by trial and error and after all trying costs nothing since it's all stored in the Google Earth .kml files.

I tried deleting that file, but the waypoints remains there.
    Any recommendation?
    Thanks in advance.

The only solution, aside from the master reset, is to delete waypoints manually from the watch.
So the best thing to do when updating the database of waypoints on google earth / basecamp, is to save the new waypoints but only import the new ones on the F3.
