Following a route with 2 stops (waypoints)?

I'm new to Basecamp + routing. I laid out a motorcycle route starting + stopping at the same location (HD dealer) with 2 waypoints along the route. I sent it to my Nuvi 55 + it downloaded correctly. When I pre-rode the route, it varied from what I entered. When I put the GPS on the bike + load the route, what should I use as the "destination"? Do I enter the first waypoint, and if so, do I have to reset anything after reaching that point? I entered the first waypoint today + everything worked great up to that point. Thereafter, it recalulated everything. I'm sure it's something I did wrong, just not sure how to enter it correctly. TIA for your help!

I have a Nuvi 56, which AFIK is a Nuvi 55 + Canada Maps. The Nuvi 55 is designed as a USA automobile navigating device with no feature to disable automatic recalculation when off-route. However, the 55 can be set to avoid highways, which in the US typically means Interstate highways such as I-77 in Canton, OH, or perhaps other 4 lane highways. But this "Highway Avoid" setting is not absolute, as short legs will be followed if necessary to get from here to there. (I just tested this over streets and roads familiar to me in Southern California. US 30 highway between East Canton and East Rutherford in the state of Ohio is not considered to be a user selectable avoidable highway.)

May I second the suggestion that the original poster first become familiar with the device default routing characteristics over single direction city street routing before trying to make out and back loops over routes containing highways. May I also suggest closing down BaseCamp on the computer and not trying to create default "Motorcycle" routing on the computer for use with the Nuvi 55. (Default Motorcycle routing on BC avoids city streets as well as highways). Good luck.

OK, I'm gettin confused now. If I select "motorcycle" in BC it avoids highways, like I'm on a dirtbike? That certainly isn't what I want, I'm on a 900lb touring machine. I do however prefer the backroads, hills, + twisties to the "big road". I'm gettin a little worried now, leavin for Sturgis in 2 months and have 4 days worth of routes laid out in BC. If they won't run properly, it's gonna REALLY screw up the trip.
  • Well you can adjust the routing options in Basecamp so either adjust the Motorcycle one so it does what you want or use the Driving one. In either case once you've loaded the route to your nuvi check it's doing what you want. If it does you should be fine.

I must have really messed up my copy of BaseCamp. Even with the new 4.4.7 version neither the Driving nor the Motorcycling routing will honor the deselection (avoidance) of Major and Interstate Highways for long distance routing from East Canton, OH, to Cicero, IL, to Fargo, ND, to Sturgis, SD. On the other hand, the Nuvi 55/56 does seem to honor the deselection of Highways in the Driving Navigation menu, where practical.

Yeah, most of us motorcycle guys have been fighting this for years. With a low end device like the 55, you are better off just selecting Driving activity mode in BC. The only really bulletproof method is to convert your route in BC to a track, which will never re-calculate. Unfortunately, some Garmin devices do not accept tracks. You will have to try this method on your 55...I don't know if that one accepts uploaded tracks or not.

The downside of tracks is that there is no guidance, you just have to look at the map and zoom in or out to follow it. I always make tracks red so they are real visible. I use them more and more these days after fighting auto-routing on various Garmin units for four years now. But this is mostly on dirt or back roads....on highways or secondary roads, using CNNA and the driving profile, I usually get what I think should be correct by picking a few shaping points, and it doesn't re-calculate. But I'm not using a 55....apples and oranges.

    Welcome to the looney bin.....
