Land Sectioning Tool

Does Garmin BaseCamp support PLSS land sectioning? I need to use aliquot parts to subdivide a section of land (1 sq. mile) in to subsections. (eg. Sec 4, NW 1/4, NE 1/4).

If not, do you know of a 3rd party tool that can do this?

Thanks,

No. BaseCamp has no capability to calculate coordinates using bearings and distances to divide up a section.

If you were to find the section corners and get gps coordinates then BaseCamp would plot them on a map, that's all.

If you just want to find some approximate section corners then Nat Geo TOPO! State Series (pick your state) has USGS quad maps that show section corners and you can pick the gps coordinates with the mouse but you can be off by 100 meters.

I have 5 states, CA NV AZ IDAHO UTAH. Tell me where you are and I might be able to get you some rough dimensions.

You need real surveying software if you want any kind of accuracy.

I use PCSurvey $800 and AutoCad-14 (old but reliable) $300.

For a free map overview, try the US Geological Survey downloads. Older contour maps of the area of interest may have section and township borders. The PDF downloads support user line drawing, at least on the most recent PDF files with imagery, so you can draw in your own parcel divisions (approximately).

USGS has GeoPDF Quads for free download. At the bottom of the download screen is an link to TerraGo. TerraGo has a free GeoPDF plug-in that allows measuring, drawing, location Lat-Long or UTM, etc. I was able to subdivide my section in subparcels and grab the coordinates for manual transfer to BaseCamp then to my GPS. It's time consuming. Also, TerraGo default is UTM with some strange datum. I finally found NAD27 which is compatible with BaseCamp. I'll be land verifying this in the next couple of days.

Hi Don, Thanks for your advice. I found a workaround using USGS' GeoPDF Quad and TerraGo software. Please take a look at my reply below.
