When I export via basecamp a third party .gpx file .... I get the option ( on my 590LM or Edge ) to convert tracks to trip.
Why would I do this? What is the difference between a track and a trip?
A trip, also known as a route, is calculated. A track is (usually) something followed, or rather actual data. Some of our users, for example a lot of our motorcycle customers, often will take tracks that others have done and want to do them themselves, and so they convert these to routes.
While it is over simplifying to say that routes are calculated and tracks are actual, that's pretty close.
One other big difference is that if you have an autorouting map on the GPS you will get directions at each turn from a trip or route....if you have a track on that same map you will only see the track. Tracks eliminate the possibility that the GPS will autoroute you in a way you do not want, which is very common.
Some folks have both simultaneously showing in two different colors so they can see when the route deviates from the desired track.
