Newb... poi issues

Hello all. I recently bought a GPSmap 60 (first GPS) and have managed to get a couple maps on it. One of them from GPSfiledepot is of Utah. On the GPS there are poi's. When viewing in Basecamp on my comp, there are none regardless of zoom. ........-DS-

I use the Utah map from GPSfileDepot and have no problems seeing POIs. Not the type you see in CNNA like gas stations and banks, but mines, springs, geologic features, and the like.

BC allows you to pick what POI's you want to see in any profile. Go to Edit->Options->Activity Profile. Select your desired Activity Profile, then under the General tab, select which POI's you wish to see. I'll bet that Geologic Places is unchecked, since these are one of the few sets of POI's available on those particular Topos.

Keep in mind that whatever you select will apply to ANY map you might look at with that Profile, and each map has it's own set of POI's, so don't uncheck too many!:)

Hmm. I wonder if we have the same Utah map. Did you get Utah 2011,the one with the yellow star?

So, starting from the Arches Visitor Center, I see several names associated with little black squares after the switchbacks: Sausage Rock, Queen Victoria, Courthouse Towers, etc. A little beyond that is North Park Avenue Trailhead, and just to the left is a black square with no name. When moused over, this becomes the Three Gossips. This is at a zoom of 0.3 miles....any closer and that name appears. This is how my Utah map works.

Yes, same map, and I see the same Arches/features you do. That map gets the upper roads/trails at the campground all wrong btw.

I was in Buckhorn Canyon at the Swell off Green River Cutoff Rd using my handheld and that is where my poi discrepancy is. I am trying to view the map in my GPS so I can see the poi's again... I'll let you know.

Ok, I figured some stuff out. Took you on a newb wild goose chase.

I finally was able to view the map on the GPS. What I am seeing are little white boxes with green tops.. I'm guessing geocaches.. that just happen to be located at what I consider to be poi's, so sorry for the terminology obfuscation!

BUT, my issue still persists.. can't see these cans/caches in Basecamp at all... I tried 'View/Datafilter/Geocache' with no luck. The white can with green top icon on my GPS is not one I'm seeing anywhere in Basecamp. Ideas?

Well, the icons available for a specific type of POI (or waypoint) in any particular GPS differ from those in other Garmin GPS's as well as what is available in BaseCamp. This has been a problem since the earliest days of mapping GPS's.

In BC, the symbol for a geocache is something like a treasure chest. It is the first symbol on the third line down under "Outdoors". When you transfer a waypoint with that symbol to your GPS you will get whatever substitute icon Garmin decided to use in that particular GPS model.

However, waypoints are created by the user, and POI's are inside the map data, which makes me think that your GPS is substituting the cans icon for what is a black square on that map in BC. What if you zoom in to a specific area and view the cans on the GPS and whatever is on BC in exactly the same area. Do the same names show up in the same places, only with different icons? When I view that same area of Arches described above on my Montana, instead of the little black squares in BC I see little black diamonds with crosshairs, but the names and positions are the same. Others have reported little black dots, blue dots, tiny circles, and so on, none of which are particularly annoying....white boxes with green tops all over your map is something else again.:mad:

One thing I am sure of is that the Utah Topo does not contain ANY geocaches, nor does any other map I am aware of. Thus that same map when transferred does not have them either. What appears to be happening (if the above test shows exact co-location of POI's with different icons) is that your GPS is using the cans to depict what is called a "generic icon symbol", common on many maps.

On some Garmins one can modify the internal icons with some third party software, but I'm not sure the 64 is one of those. At least you can update the firmware to the latest version and see if that helps:

Hopefully someone else with a 64 will chime in here, I'm not going to be of much further help, having never seen one.

WELL, WELL! Just before hitting Send, I had a look at the 64 on Garmin's site and found this: "GPSMAP 64 supports paperless geocaching with 250,000 preloaded caches with hints and descriptions from Geocaching.com...."

So now the question becomes: Do you see any POI's on the GPS like the Three Gossips that DO NOT have the can icon, but something more like what I see? If so, Perhaps there is a way to get the 64 to turn off display of Geocaches. Nothing about simply turning off the display of them.

The reason you cannot see these caches in BC is because they are not part of any map, but in essence are a bunch of Custom POI's that exist only on the unit.
