Total Ascent with dowloaded tracks

Hello,

When I download a track in BaseCamp from Internet, how can I find the total ascent of this track ? It's an important information to know if the track is difficult or not.

Has somebody an idea about how to proceed to obtain that information ?

Many thanks

  • Should appear in Track properties. To get there double click the track or right click and Open. This assumes the data is available and this depends on a couple of factors, including the map being used.

Ok, but now in the case of this data is not available, what is the best way to obtain for that track the information about the total ascent in BaseCamp ?
  • If the track does not contain elevation data, the only way to get elevation data within BaseCamp is to have a map of the area that contains a digital elevation model (DEM). If you have such a map, then you can right click the track name in the lower left pane, choose "Advanced" and there should be an option to get elevation data from the map's DEM.

Otherwise, you will have to search the internet to see if there is some software out there that will do the same thing. Perhaps the information can be obtained from uploading the track to Google Earth. But I'm afraid I have no knowledge of what's available to accomplish this task.
