Waypoints on my nuvi 50 appear to be "read-only" - how do I delete them?

I have just downloaded BaseCamp - great looking application, I can do everything I would expect to be able to except change or delete waypoints already on the device. I can copy them off the device, change them, then copy them back, but then I have both the new and old versions on the device... How do I stop the information on the device being "read-only"?
  • You can't. It's the way nuvis operate. The solution is to load your waypoints etc into Base Camp, delete the data off your nuvi using the nuvi menus, then edit the data in BaseCamp and send it all back to your nuvi.

Note this creates a temp.gpx file in the GPX folder of your nuvi. Once you're happy that the data is back on your nuvi delete that file or it will cause problems later.

Well that's annoying... so delete everything on the device one by one?

Another question, is it possible to add Google or OSM (or any others) as a basemap on BaseCamp?

I'm not sure what qualifies as a waypoint on a Nuvi 50, but I just spent an hour with a Nuvi 56 trying to create a 2nd saved (address) record for a 2nd person at the same address. No can do, and cannot save or edit the duplicate.

So, back to "Waypoints", what ever that means. I just created a labeled Map point with coordinate location and was able to delete or edit some of the fields, but not the lat/lon values. First time I have unboxed the Nuvi 56 for a while, but all in all things are simpler for me without trying to load stops from Base Camp into the Nuvi Trip Planner. .
  • The OP used waypoints, which imply saved places/favourites depending which model nuvi you have and which locale you're using.

It's possible to create another saved place etc at the same location, what isn't possible is to have 2 named the same.

On the more advanced nuvis you can delete all favourites at once, I'm not sure on your model. If it's there do a Where to, Favourites (or saved places), then tap the 3bar icon and select Delete Favourites then All.

The Basecamp basemap 'is what it is' but you can add both OSM maps and Garmin maps to your computer for Basecamp to use.
  • On the more advanced nuvis you can delete all favourites at once, ...

I'm pretty sure my 765T doesn't qualify as a "more advanced" Nuvi. :) But it still allows for deleting all Favorites in one shot. Although the menus are different, once I get to the page where I can delete Favorites I have the option of selecting just specific waypoints to delete or selecting All. I just did it yesterday to get a nicely cleaned up list of waypoints on it after cluttering things up by using two GPSs (Nuvi in the car, eTrex for hiking) on a 3 week trip.

  • I was referring to the current range. Some of the current (and recent) 2 digit nuvis don't allow it, why I have no idea. The OP has a nuvi 50, that's one of the ones that doesn't allow you to 'delete all favourites'.
