Categories in Basecamp no longer transfer to the GPS

I keep lists in Basecamp for off-road trails - all of the waypoints for each trail are in a list in Basecamp.

It used to be that when I transferred the list to the GPS (2555), the list would show up as a category on the GPS, so my California Gulch list (for example) in Basecamp would be seen as a category when you went to Saved under Where To. Then you could click on California Gulch and see all of the waypoints in that list/category.

Now, when I transfer a new list, the category is lost, so the category no longer shows up on the GPS. This morning I created a Bull Canyon list in Basecamp, added 6 waypoints to it, and transferred it to the GPS. There's no Bull Canyon entry in the Saved list on the GPS, so I have to go to Saved/All Saved Places, and all 6 waypoints are in that list, but that list contains hundreds of individual waypoints so they're very hard and time consuming to find.

I don't think I'm doing anything differently than I used to when this worked in the past, and I've kept both Basecamp and the GPS software updated to current versions.

Why don't my lists transfer into categories on the GPS anymore and what can I do to fix it? Having only individual waypoint in a list of hundreds of waypoints on the GPS is virtually unusable in the field.
  • That used to work but the behaviour was changed at the request of many users. Now lists are ignored by your device. You need to set the categories in route/track/waypoint properties.

I just tried that. I created a route from the waypoints in a list, then created a track from that, but I cannot find a way to set waypoint properties from either the route or the track.

Then I tried sending the list that the route, track and waypoints are in to the GPS, and I can't find either the route or the track on the GPS after the transfer is complete.

I don't understand your instructions, this doesn't seem to help at all.

What I want to do is quickly be able to select a list on my GPS, and then select a waypoint from that list to start my journey, rather than having to scroll through hundreds of waypoints on the GPS.
  • Well first no nuvi can read a track, so sending a track isn't going to work.

A route sent to a 2555 should appear in Trip Planner, see this FAQ

    https://support.garmin.com/support/searchSupport/case.faces?caseId=%7B65814150-50b3-11dc-4ec8-000000000000%7D

To assign categories to waypoints open waypoint properties in BC and click on the Categories tab, then assign a category. Note you can block select waypoints and so change more than one waypoint at a time should you wish.

I just did what was in the FAQ, but no routes showed up on the 2555.

Did that earlier today, manually assigned categories to all of the waypoints in a list, then transferred that list to my GPS, but the categories did not get transferred along with the points.

Do I have to delete the waypoints on the GPS in order for the updated ones in basecamp to be transferred?

Yes, it seems that way at the moment. I tend to clear everything off my nuvi and then send what I want back.

As for routes, where are you looking in the 2555 for routes (trips). They appear under Apps, Trip Planner. Note it may take a while for them to appear although on later models (my 2508 for example) they seem instantaneous but I know others with earlier models find it may take a few minutes.

Thanks, I'll try deleting the waypoints on the GPS, then I'll make sure I add the categories to the waypoints in Basecamp, then I'll re-transfer them to the GPS and see if that gives me what I need on the GPS.

The biggest issue is that many nuvi's don't allow you to change the data on the the device once it is there. What I do even personally at home is wipe my device clean, and re-transfer everything back to the nuvi. That gives me everything, including categories in the exact state that I want them to be in.

    Thanks !

I couldn't figure out what had changed. Thanks to this forum, I'm up and running with the new behaviour. Think of categories as "tags" and it all makes sense.

Does BaseCamp maintain a "Category List"?

OK, I understand the old "category = list-name" implementation and why it was changed.

I see the (new) Category tab on the Waypoint Property screen and the option to create/add a category to a waypoint.

My question is: Does BaseCamp 'maintain' or 'keep track of' or 'remember' the categories that have been created?
Or does the user have to remember all of the category-strings that s/he created?
I was looking for some kind of drop-down from which to see existing categories and select one. Or create a new one.
  • Once you've created some just start typing in the box and previous ones that you've entered that match what you've used before should appear. So if you've entered walking and wandering as a category and type w you'll see both pop up for you to choose.

    Aren't you seeing that?
