Need help creating route - or I'm returning my Garmin!

Hi,
Frustrated and ready to return Garmin if I can't figure this out.....help.

What I want to do is create a route on BaseCamp (or another map), and load it on my Garmin. It's much easier to have heads up verbal directions instead of trying to read directions, while driving, line by line. I didn't think it would be so difficult, but BaseCamp has me pulling my hair out.

Like so many other maps, I want to be able to put in my starting point (address in Florida) and my ending point (address in N.C.). Typically when I enter this info into Google Maps or MapQuest, it directs me into a direction I don't want to go (ie. like heading directly into Atlanta!). I have another way I prefer, so I would need to make adjustments to the original directions/map. That in itself can be frustrating, trying to get the blue line to move. Then, when I have the route exactly to my liking, I want to be able to load it on my Garmin Nuvi 2597 LMT for safe keeping.

This task, so far, seems to be impossible. If there is anyone who can guide me through this process I would be very grateful. Not sure how much more time I am willing to spend trying to figure this BaseCamp out. Not user friendly AT ALL!
  • Note that on a nuvi, when you navigate a trip, you want to pick the first waypoint as your destination, not the final destination. It sounds like that may have been the error you made.

Edit: Sorry for duplicating your reply sussamb ... I should have checked for new posts before replying ... but at least our answers were consistent.:)
  • No problem ... we're always pretty much in sync :)
  • Unfortunately it only gave me the final destination as the only option to choose. I have now tried another route for tomorrow and changed my calculation mode to shortest as I seem to recall I had to do that on my TomTom when I transferred a route using Tyre but that was some years ago. This time the various waypoints are displayed on my Garmin after transferring the route and I will chose the first waypoint. Will see what happens tomorrow, hopefully I don't have to choose the next waypoint in turn as each waypoint is reached. I'm still not sure if I have to add further waypoints along my chosen route when planning m route on Basecamp or whether just by using the insert tool to adjust the route that will be enough.
    Thanks for your replies

  • Trip navigation will automatically continue the route on the next segment when you pass a waypoint.
  • I planned a 90 mile trip on Basecamp, adding several waypoints to make sure the route was followed as planned. These waypoints were displayed when I selected the route on my Garmin and off I went (I'm still not sure if I have to have the Navigation mode set to shortest route to follow the waypoints or not). As it happened I had to make an unplanned detour a couple of miles after setting off and then rejoined the route missing the first waypoint by a few hundred yards.
My Garmin then re-calculated the route every few mins trying to take me back to the first waypoint. I thought these re-calculations would have stopped after ignoring them and continuing on my planned route but that wasn't the case.
After about 25 miles and many re-calculations back to the waypoint I had missed I stopped the planned route and started a new route to my destination which didn't take me the way I had intended. Is this normal when you miss a waypoint?

I would have expected the programmer of the software to have allowed for this to happen and that the re-calculations to have stopped once I had ignored the re-calculated route a few times or passed the second waypoint or perhaps gone a certain number of miles along my planned route or even had a message pop up on my Garmin asking me if I wanted to dismiss/delete that previous waypoint and continue to the 2nd/3rd waypoint etc

Is this a flaw in the software or the normal procedure when you miss a waypoint?

Also how close do you have to go to a waypoint for the Garmin to acknowledge you have been there?
  • You can choose either fastest or shortest .... It's up to you. I set mine to fastest.

As for skipping points you can either set them to shaping points or via points. Via points you have to go through, shaping points you can skip. Unless I must visit them I use shaping points throughout.
  • How do you set them as shaping points? I cannot find any info on shaping points. Are shaping points the points created when you use the rubber band to shape your route?

Is it possible to change waypoints created by inserting the Flag icon into shaping points that I can then skip if I wish to?

Its certainly taking me some time to try to understand the logic behind making a route that I want and then getting it all to work properly. Thanks again for your help
  • In BaseCamp open Route properties (right click and select Open or double click the route), right click a point and you can select them to be set to 'do not alert on arrival/shaping point'. If they are set as a shaping point then the option is 'Alert on arrival'
  • Another way to set them as shaping points is to place them precisely in an intersection. This is especially useful if you share routes with anyone using older GPS units using the older RoutePlanner.

Thanks again for your help. That information was useful as was using the intersections. I have been getting into the habit of inserting lots of waypoints into my shaped route because I had originally assumed that once I had shaped my route on Basecamp and then transferred it to my Garmin that it would automatically follow that route. I'm getting a little more used to Basecamp now but is it possible to have the waypoints as shaping points by default as that would be my preference?

Would you know if its possible to reverse the route that has been transferred to the Garmin from Basecamp when driving the route? I often go 45-50 miles to see a client and then wish to come back the same way. I realise that I can reverse the route on Basecamp and then transfer both outward and return routes to my Garmin but the other day when I had only transferred the outgoing route I couldn't see an option to reverse the route when I wanted to go back the way I had come.
