'mass storage' usage; etrex 30

what stupid thing am I missing here !?

etrex 30: 4.20; BaseCamp: 4.4.6

I'm trying to figure out how to make use of this microSD mass storage (MS)?
- of course:
> I can see the MS when connecting the etrex to my PC
> I added some folders .. hoping to use them on the etrex when in the field ....

- Questions
> how in the world can I access this microSD on the etrex ?
> except that I can do setup --> System --> USB mode: 'Garmin or Mass Storage' I do NOT see what for
I possibly could use this storage ?!?
> e.g. loading different maps onto the MS and load them when needed in the field?
> in other words: what is the benefit of this MS when on a hiking tour ?

I must miss something fundamental in this etrex Garmin philosophy!
Can anybody give me some hints (or documentation) and samples on how to make some intelligent use of this MS!

PS: since 15 years I'm using Garmin GPSs, and, I'm considering myself not being a IT illiterate!
thanks for your time and hints

  • Your card can be used for all sorts of things. Maps, Birdseye satellite imagery, waypoints, tracks, routes etc. I load all my additional data to the card, leaving my Etrex as 'clean' as possible.

Now, I'm not sure what folders you added but you can't specifically access folders from your Etrex neither will your Etrex save to the sd card. It will only read data from it that you have pre-loaded.

that's exactly what I wanted to use it for e.g. load tracks, routes, waypoints onto the mass storage for later use in the field. I.e. load a 'old' route /way point when I'm in the field?

As far as I'm concerned I can as well use a normal USB stick .. or, is this microSD just that?
That would mean I have to prepare the etrex at home an cannot change it on the fly!

    thanks for clarification, ed
  • Not sure why you mention a usb stick. Your Etrex needs a micro sd card.

Maps need to be placed in a folder named Garmin on the card, waypoints, routes etc into Garmin\GPX. If you send data to the card using Basecamp it will create these folders and place the data in the correct ones.

well, I obviously did not explain it clearly.

    1) yes I added a micro SD card to the etrex. Now, when connecting the etrex to my PC (via USB) it obviously opens the SD card and , yes, I can copy/paste etc. whatever I want onto that SD card. I.e. the etrex SD card looks like any other USB stick!

    2) when using BaseCamp to send e.g. routes, waypoints to the etrex it automatically loads it in the correct folders into the inbuilt memory. Yes, I can do that all ok.

    3. However
How can I load routes, waypoints etc. onto the SD card in such a way that I can later, in the field (or for that matter on a hiking trip), retrieve these routes, waypoints from that SD card.
The etrex obviously can ONLY load routes, waypoints etc. from the internal memory (I NEVER see any routes, waypoints I have loaded onto the SD card!

My main question: is there a way to access the SD card directly from the etrex i.e. when the etrex is NOT connected to a PC!
My conclusion so far: if I'm in the field I do NOT have access to the SD card! Is that correct?
(In case that is correct I can as well just use a USB stick instead of the SD card, right?)

I still hope I'm wrong and somebody can tell me how to, somehow, access the SD card via the etrex!?

  • Maybe I'm not explaining it correctly or you're not listening. Provided the data is in the correct folder in the sd card the Etrex will show it, it doesn't matter to your Etrex whether it's on the card or the device.

Now if data sent by Basecamp isn't showing something is wrong. Is the card formatted FAT32?

    oops, please accept my apologies!

I was so fixed on finding the folders I defined on the SD card that I didn't realize that BaseCamp made a Garmin folder!
So, obviously there must be (or is generated) the same file structure on the SDcard as internal! hence, no private named folders!

now all is clear .... and running
sorry for my stupidity and sorry for taking your time

  • Not a problem, it's why we're all here :)

If I may add to this thread with what I think are related questions: just got eTrex 30 X and am downloading City Map to internal memory as I type.
    Questions:
    1) Is there a limit to what type of MicroSD card I can use with this? The market has a variety of capacities and "class" ratings all the way up to 10.
    2) Understand that map is just for one device, but having downloaded it, is it legal/possible to move it (ie from internal to microSD) or back it up (ie make a copy on my computer which could be loaded back to the same device if any sort of failure. Garmin website says downloads possible for up to a year after purchase but what about after? In any case, web download is pretty slow.
  • 1) For the Etrex it can take a card up to 32Gb. Class doesn't really matter.

    2) Definitely, and I would advise you do so.

Thank you. Answered all my questions.
