Help!! I can't plot the route (itinerary) I want!

Hi

I'm new to garmin and Basecamp. I use an E-TREX for mountain bike riding using topomaps.

When I plot the route on Basecamp, if at some point the track is not represented on the topo map (but I know it exists), I can't draw a line between the two points and the software calculates a big detour to link them. I thought the "straight line" function would be ok for this, but it doesn't work this way.

Thank you for your kind help

  • Basecamp now allows you to swap Activity profiles, so if you create a route using an activity other then Direct so that the route is calculated based on the map, but then want to insert a 'Direct route' somewhere along the route first open up the Route Properties then highlight the point where you want to switch to Direct. Click on the icon that looks like a clock (right hand side, bottom icon) which allows you to edit the via point. Switch the profile to Direct. You should then be able to insert a direct route from that point to the next.

Now, whether that will be retained when you send the route to your Etrex I'm not sure as various GPS behave in different ways. If it doesn't then convert the route to a track and then send it to your GPS.
