Drive error and cannot edit

I have a Garmin BMW Navigator IV and when I connect to my Windows 8.1 PC it reports that there are errors on my Garmin Navigator drive and wants to "fix" it. I am hesitant to perform the drive scan and let Windows "fix" my Garmin drive as my Garmin Navigator IV is working just fine - I believe in if it aint broke don't fix it! My concern is that if I let Windows "fix" the drive error that my Garmin unit will become unusable. Any suggestions out there?

What I have noticed is that when using BaseCamp to plan routes, I am unable to delete or modify any waypoints or routes on my Navigator IV and have to drag and drop into "My Collection" first before I can work on anything. Is this related to the above "error"?
  • Did you see this from the first time you connected the device to 8.1? If so, the same thing happened to me when I upgraded from XP to a new laptop with 8.1 a few months ago, it said that from the first time I connected my Zumo 550 to the new laptop. I also resisted for a while, but finally backed up ALL the files on the device and bit the bullet and let it "fix" it. All was fine, and it hasn't warned me again. I googled it, and as I recall, it may have something to do with disconnecting an external drive or device, 8.1 is more robust about that I think, and the first time it sees a drive, it doesn't find whatever it's looking for to know that it was previously disconnected only after stopping the drive correctly. But just a guess on my part. I've had the same experience with other flash drives previously used with XP and now 8.1, and "fixed" with no issues.

As to your second question, I believe that from within BC, you can't modify or delete any data on a connected Zumo, any deletions must be done on the device itself when disconnected. My strategy is to keep all useful data in BC, and before loading planned routes to my 550, I delete all data and log files from the Zumo so it is empty before connecting it. Then I load all of a list for a trip, and only that data is on there. Others use different strategies.
