Restoring altitude display to BaseCamp

When I first loaded BaseCamp there was an overlaid window which showed the points at which the route was calculated and a further option which displayed the altitude and gradient as a graph. It was a bit big and was getting the way of the map today so I just closed it, as I thought. What I seem to have done is deleted it altogether because I can't find any way to restore it. It was quite useful because it was possible to trace along it and see how steep the climb was along the route I'd ridden.

I've tried everything, including uninstalling and reloading to no avail. If I load BaseCamp onto another PC it works as it did before I closed the extra window. Any ideas?

Apparently the name of the window I can't restore after closing it is the Track Dialogue Box.

I really would like some help on this as it's driving me mad trying to find out how to get it back. The BaseCamp Help is useless as it seems to refer to a different (earlier?) version of the software. The videos are about as useful as chocolate teapot as well. I'm begining to regret choosing a Garmin GPS for cycling.

  • Find the Track or Route in the lower left pane. Either double click on it or right click on it and choose open. You should get a pop-up window with multiple tabs. The graph tab will display a plot if there is elevation data (from device or a map with a DEM).

Is this what you are after?

Thanks but all that does is put the track onto the map display. The Track Dialogue Box (which inclues the Graph option) still doesn't show.

  • I assume you mean that the object is highlighted on the map, but there is no pop-up window opening up.

My operating system is XP, so I am limited to BaseCamp version 4.2.5. But, I would not expect this to have changed in later versions. Here are most of the ways to open the properties window in v4.2.5.

1 double left click on the object in the lower left pane
2 right click on the object in the lower left pane and choose open from the list that appears
3 select the object in the lower left pane and choose open under the Edit menu at the top
4 selecting an object in the lower left pane my cause a balloon to appear on the map with the objects name. Click on the name in the balloon.

If none of these open the properties window, try creating a waypoint and see if any work with it. It sounds like you may have a bad installation. You may have to save your data (I would probably be redundant and use the backup under the file menu, export everything as a gpx file and possibly send to my device as well) and try a fresh download and install.

But before doing that, I would wait to see if some with the current version replies to the thread. Sorry I could not be of more help.

I'm still the same person who opened the query. I created several identities in an effort to be able to post because nothing seemed to work, which seems typical of Garmin :(

Anyway, thanks for the reply. I tried all your suggestions but none of those has any effect on BaseCamp. The options appear (ie 'Open' etc) but clicking on them doesn't appear to do anything at all. Never, ever seen a 'Properties' option which the Garmin Help seems to mention all the time. I'm running Win7 and BaseCamp ver 4.4.6. Unfortunately ear;lier version don't seem to be available.

I've been invlved with computers since 1960, mostly hardware design but some embedded code as well and this really is a dreadful user hostile program with almost useless documentation. Not what I would expect froma company selling expensive hardware which needs this stuff to be useful, so not really free.
  • Rob -- It might help for you to post specifics about: PC OS, BC version # (latest is 4.4.6), map version on PC, device you are using, map on device.

All the methods BT posts above work in 4.4.6. If you cannot even get a properties window to appear for any kind of item (waypoint, route, track) that is in a list, then something is really wrong, I'm not sure what to tell you. The properties window (not really a "dialog box", there's no dialog) shows only when you select an item and "open" it, but when you close it, it cannot be eliminated from the system. It should always reappear any time you "open" any item. The appearance of the properties window, i.e. the tabs that are made available, is unique to the item and sometimes to a filter setting within the window. And if you do get a properties window to appear for any item, you don't have to close it before selecting another item, by selecting something else, the window will immediately adjust to the appropriate appearance for that new item.

If you can at least get a properties window to appear, then whether you can see elevation data will depend on whether there is elevation data there. Many map sets do not contain elev data. If you are using a map that does not have elev, then the only type of entity that you can see the elevation graph for is a track that has been recorded on your device while in motion (sometimes named "Active Log"), and then downloaded to BC. Any routes, or any tracks created within BC (not from the device) will not show such a graph. However, any track should have a "graph" tab in the properties window, but if selected and there is no elev data, it will show "There is no elevation data in the selected track(s)."

Not sure if any of this helps... Oops, you posted while I was writing...
  • Rob -- Very curious! When you go to select "Edit/Open Selected Item...", is the icon to the left of the command in color, or is it gray?
  • You should be able to download version 4.2.5 from this link:

    http://www8.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=7161

However, I would recommend that you try a fresh download and installation of the current version.

Another thing that occurs to me is that the window some how got pushed off screen. Possibly deleting the user.config file might fix this. I believe it is safe to do so. Could someone else comment? The location depends on operating system, but it something like c\documents and setting\%user%\Local Settings\application data\garmin corp\basecamp.....\%version number%

Thanks for the link to the earlier version.

I'd already tried uninstalling and reinstalling ver 4.4.6 several times but however I tried to clear potential sources of Garmin data (cleaned the registry, deleted Documents and Settings folder temporarily, uninstalled Garmin Express - desperate!) I couldn't get a 'clean' install. It always came up with all my data intact (nothing important, it just has stuff already stored on my Cycle Touring Garmin unit) and the lack of the Track Dialogue Box (which has the route Graph display as an option).

Now I've had a 'clean' install which has the Track Dialogue Box I've been missing. There some things that are different from the later version but this does work and I'll resist Garmin's urges for me to update :)

I was hoping to download a jpeg image of my screen but it didn't work. However, I haven't solved my problem but with your help I've been able side-step it. I just have to be careful not to close the window inadvertently again or I may be back where I started. Thanks to all who replied - it's appreciated.
  • This is so curious, I don't think you should have to go back to 4.2.5 to get what you want, but I guess whatever works... However, you will probably some day want to upgrade to the latest BC version, so you may have to solve the problem in the end anyway.

Is the window below what you are looking for? If so, it is readily available in 4.4.6. But you do have to be able to select and open an item in a list.
