Question about shaping points

My question: In Basecamp, if I right click on the purple route, then choose "remove shaping points" will the action remove the flags & announcements without screwing up my routing on my Nuvi 1450 once the transfer is made?
Thanks
  • Well, since shaping points are inserted to modify the route to make it go exactly via the roads you want it to, if you remove those shaping points, then recalculate, the route should revert back to its form before the shaping points were inserted. So yes, it will "screw it up", relative to the intended, modified form.

If you're after simply having shaping points that have no flag and are not announced, you can either take care to place the points at the intersection of two roads (the description in the route properties should say "X Street and Y Ave", for example), which works for most devices I think, or, in the route properties, set the shaping points to "do not announce". This latter method works only on some devices, other forum members can advise if it works on your Nuvi, or you can just try it and you'll know.
  • Unfortunately shaping points aren't supported on the 14xx series, so they will be treated as normal viapoints.

Same with the GPSmap 62s and 64s devices. The device alerts on "shaping" points.
  • I believe the only Garmins that support shaping points are the nuvis from 2013 models on ... and probably the same for dezl and zumos. Handhelds don't support them AFAIK.
  • I believe Zumos have supported them from the start, at least my 2009 one does, and I learned it at that time from others on the Zumo forum who had been using the intersection strategy for some time before that.
  • Thanks for the replies. It sounds as if I have created the annoying "u-turn" announcements even though the pink line takes me on correctly, because I found from experience that if the point is placed after the turn, the route is forced go my way, but in return I have to deal with the extra announcements and the extra flags. From this post, I now realize that zooming all the way in to place the point "in the intersection" could possible eliminate those problems.

I have 2 ea 1450's and 1 ea 1490 and they all handle Basecamp well. Last Fall, I purchased a new 2595 and it does well as long as I start at the beginning of the route. But, if I start mid-point in the route the older units announce "recalculating" when any part of the route is reached and direct me from there. On the other hand, the 2595 wants to get me lost by taking me cross country to the next point (maybe 10 miles away) and going it's way even though my truch is sitting on the established route.

    Thanks again!
