Duplicated Route Editing - The Solution?

Further to my earlier posting "Problem Editing a "Duplicated" Route 01-30-2015 01:23 PM and after some testing, my conclusions and workaround process for comment.
I've started a new posting for clarity (apologies if this isn't the correct protocol). Thanks for all the comments on the first posting.

It seems that problems result from trying to duplicate a "List" rather than simply the "Route" file contained in that list (as indicated in Options "A" & "B" below). In my opinion the "Duplicate" option should be removed for "Lists"

Also, I can see no point after selecting "Duplicate" for the question "Would you like to duplicate Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks contained in the List as well?". Why should "Yes" ever be required as currently it generates a second (and renamed with appended number) waypoint for the same location. Surely waypoints such as Car Parks, Bus Stops, Pubs and other points of interest are fixed locations common to all routes using them. More than one reference for the same location is very untidy, confusing and pointless.

Option C is my workaround - my solution.

The Test Route
I created new Circular Direct Mode Route "R1" with 1 Start/Finish & 2 other Waypoints (in List "New 1"). This contains Waypoints "Start-Fin", "StopOne", "StopTwo" and Route "R1"

Option A - Duplicating an existing List - "Yes" to "Would you like to duplicate.."
Highlight List "New 1"
Click "Duplicate" and the question "Would you like to duplicate Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks contained in the List as well?"
If I select "Yes" then a new list "New 1 (1)" is produced.
This contains Waypoints "Start-Fin1", "Start-Fin2", "Start-Fin3", "StopOne1", "StopOne2" "StopTwo1", "StopTwo2" and Route "R1 1"
Highlighting Route "R1 1" and moving a via point by dragging on map display works OK. This option does not affect the original Route "R1" but we are left with all the unwanted waypoint duplicates.

Option B - Duplicating an existing List - "No" to "Would you like to duplicate.."
Highlight List "New 1"
Click "Duplicate" and the question "Would you like to duplicate Waypoints, Routes, and Tracks contained in the List as well?"
If I select "No" (to duplicate waypoints) then a new list "New 1 (1)" is produced.
This contains Waypoints "Start-Fin", "StopOne", "StopTwo" and Route "R1". The same as the original List "New 1". This is exactly what is required.
Unfortunately, highlighting the second Route "R1" and moving a via point by dragging on map display is also duplicated on the original Route "R1". (any alterations on the original route are also duplicated on the second).
This Option doesn't seem to serve any useful purpose.

Option C - the Workaround - Duplicating an individual Route File
Open List "New 1". Highlight the Route "R1"
Select "Duplicate" with the "No" option (otherwise unwanted duplicated and renumbered Waypoints as Option A above).
This adds Route R1 1 to the Original list "New 1".
Route "R1 1" can be changed without affecting Route" R1" - Just as required.
To tidy things up, highlight Route "R1 1" and "Send To" relevant List Folder, Creating "New list" say "New 2". This copies Route "R1 1" together with the way point set.
  • Well clearly you shouldn't duplicate a list in this situation, when all you want is to duplicate a route. As for duplicating route points, the option to select Yes is useful in many circumstances, so both yes and no are appropriate IMO.
  • Well, I, for one, use "duplicate" a lot for route creation, and never EVER choose "Yes" to the duplicate question, so I would vote for at least making "No" the default, or add an option in preferences to designate which one should be the default for our installation. I think this was suggested when the duplicate function was added a long time ago.
  • Don't feel it makes sense to have a default, I certainly occasionally switch and having to 'reset' a default every time would be a pain. At least now there is the option of whether to duplicate or not.

I'm not sure of the value of generally duplicating a route without duplicating the waypoints within it, so I'm clearly missing something. If I want to work with the original waypoints I tend to use the original route.
  • What I meant was not to eliminate the window where you can choose, only that when it pops up, it already defaults to Yes or No, according to your setting in preferences, thus whichever is most common for you, you can just hit enter right away and not have to change the selection. As for how to use duplicate, if I have a series of routes where the ending waypoint of one is the starting waypoint of the next (my most common situation), it is easy to duplicate the first, answer No to duplicating waypoints, and in the route properties window add the new end waypoint, delete the previous starting waypoint, recalc, and voila. It helps that the name of the second route is already based on the first one, which I made follow my naming convention, so just a slight edit of the name of the second route is needed to make it correct. To each his own, I guess.
