Problem Editing a "Duplicated" Route

Are you sure you're selecting duplicate? It should automatically be renamed with a 1 appended and changes to it aren't reflected in the original provided you select the option not to duplicate way points.

How, precisely are you editing a route? If you are moving a waypoint or via point that is contained in both routes for example, it would move that point in both routes.

This thread perfectly illustrates the reason I use Mapsource when I want to explore multiple variations of a route. Trying to do it in Basecamp requires duplication of everything you might want to change in the route. If you don't understand *exactly* how Basecamp works under the hood you end up with a mess of unintended consequences.

Unfortunately, even when you do understand how it works and do it correctly, you still end up with a mess to clean up when you're done and want to keep just one route. And to clean it up you also have to understand exactly what Basecamp did, and will do.

Like many things about Basecamp, playing with route variations requires you to understand - and remember! - too much about Basecamp's inner workings.

It's not really that difficult. When you select to duplicate a route it asks if you want to duplicate waypoints. If you don't, changes you make in those waypoints are duplicated in both routes. If you do then you have a completely new route with new waypoints.

As for clearing up, it's no more difficult than selecting the route or routes you no longer want and selecting 'delete', which is no different to Mapsource.

The last time I tried it the routes were deleted but there were still a mess of duplicated waypoints left. Finding and cleaning them all up was a time consuming pain in the posterior.

In Mapsource I simply exit the relevant instance(s) without saving and it's done.

If the waypoints are part of the route deleting the route now deletes the waypoints. That's possibly a change from the last time you tried :)

I do agree though that the ability in MapSource to simply 'exit' is very useful!

Quite possibly.

But it still has the potential to make a mess. Example: I duplicate a route, say, twice (making a total of three versions) then mess around with it and decide it's the second of the versions I want to keep. If the route deletion now works as you described, I'm left with waypoint names with an extraneous number on the end of them. Not only are the ones from the third copy gone but also the "prime" (unnumbered) ones are now gone, too.

And so the mess in the The Collection grows. Ugggh...

I think I've found a Workaround solution to this problem
