etrex 20 and maps

Hi,
I recently bought an eTrex20 bundle with Canada Topo map on microSD card. Basecamp installed. Also downloaded and installed some free maps that I can see and use in Basecamp.

Read the FAQ, forum search, wiki, watched videos, etc. I want to make sure I understand how this works.

Out of the box the card is unreadable from a card reader attached to my pc (win7) (wanted to make a backup), but once I installed the card in the eTrex20, which I presume unlocked it, I can see and use it directly on the eTrex20, and in BC through the eTrex. If I turn off or disconnect the eTrex, then BC no longer has access to the Topo map, and I cannot upload it to the pc, right?

I can take the microSD card out of the eTrex and put it in the pc card reader, and now I can see and use the Topo map in BC without the eTrex attached. However It seems I can't download the Topo map (all or portions of it) from BC to the eTrex, which means to have the eTrex use the Topo map on its own, the original card must be in it? Have I got this right?

Since I have other maps, I was thinking I could install a generic microSD card in the eTrex, copy maps on it, and also copy the Topo map to it; this way I'd have the original maps on my pc and a copy on the eTrex. Would that work? Once the original uSD card is unlocked, can its map be copied to a generic uSD card in the eTrex along with others?

From what I read it is not possible to install the Topo map from the original uSD card onto the the pc; to use the map in BC the only way is to have the original uSD card in the pc's card reader (or in the eTrex20), right? It looks like installing on pc and eTrex could be done, but only from a DVD-based Topo map.

I basically want to view, search and prepare routes on my pc with the Topo and other maps, independently from the eTrex20, and when I'm ready I can transfer the routes/waypoints, etc created on the pc to the eTrex, which would internally (on its generic uSD card) already have all the maps I use on the pc. Can this be done?

I also want to make sure that if I have a generic card in the eTrex as mass storage for other maps, that I don't have to remove it if I want to use the Topo map on the original uSD card...

Thanks
  • If the map is locked to the card you can't use in on another card. However I believe you can copy the files to another card or usb stick and Basecamp will still read the map, saving you the need to plug in your Etrex every time. You can also create a 'virtual disk' and pop the map files onto that.
