Can I have more Symbols ?

G'day

I would like to change the standard flag for some of my favorite cafes to a coffee mug symbol. I can't find one on the list and was wondering if there is a way to ad more symbols, possibly even create your own etc.

Is that possible and if so how do you do it ?

Thanks for all the help

Cheers
  • While I use several custom symbols, Basecamp displays some symbols (not custom) that I like, only to find out they are not available/usable on my GPSmap 64s. Would be nice if the symbol library on device could be updated (without having to create custom symbols).

Basecamp appears to display a number of symbols that cover a range of devices. At the very least, perhaps Basecamp could become device aware when it comes to the "stock" symbols it displays.
  • You can't update the symbol library on your device, and yes, BaseCamp supports a lot more symbols than any single device does.
The only way is to use custom symbols, which your device supports. There is a trick to use standard symbols in BaseCamp that aren't supported by your device: just copy symbol files with the proper names in the CustomSymbols folder. Here you can download an (almost *) complete set of symbol files in the correct format and with proper names: http://www.javawa.nl/customsymbols_en.html
The page doesn't contain any explanation yet, but I'm going to add one.

Remember that the number of custom waypoint symbols is limited; no more than 56.

*) Some symbol names contain slashes, but you can't use slashes in file names... I added some extra geocaching symbols instead.

There's another use for that. Some outdoor models use a standard symbol (blue pin) to show all waypoints/via's in an active route which needlessly clutters the screen.

I, and others, have created a transparent custom symbol and named it "Pin, Blue.bmp" as a workaround.

Of course one can replace standard symbols with their own using the same trick.

Here's another thread that might help

    MapSource 6.16.3 Waypoint Symbols

Amen to that...those blue pushpins on a route really do clutter the screen and they are still there even if the associated waypoints use a different standard or custom symbol.
    Thanks.

Interesting, BC has a beer mug, a glass of wine, a glass of soda and a slice of pizza for symbols but, no cup of coffee!

I hope I have the right place.

I have a number of custom Points of Interest load on my Garmin StreetPilot 2720 using "Garmin POI Loader". I can view them on my StreetPilot just fine, however, I cannot figure how to get them loaded into Basecamp. I understand under "Maps" in the Basecamp menu, I could select "Manage Custom POIs" and I would, but it is not active.

    Please advise

  • Currently we have a known issue with this menu item that we have open cases for. The menu item is only enabled if you have a device connected that supports custom POIs but at moment this feature is under repair.

One work around you might consider is to import the POI's you care about as regular waypoints and set the symbol. There is a custom symbols folder in your My Garmin folder in your documents. Adding the symbol there following the naming convention of the other custom symbols will allow them to be chooseable in the symbols drop-down under "Custom." These won't be seen as custom POIs but they could be loaded into BaseCamp as regular waypoints until we have this feature fixed.

Let me know if you have any other questions.
  • I was hoping to replace a couple of the built-in symbols with custom symbols. My device (64s) supports this. I created a symbol named 'Unknown Cache.bmp' and copied it to the Custom Symbols folder on the 64s. This symbol now automatically replaces the built-in symbol for this geocache type on the 64s map with no further interaction from me.

I copied the same symbol file to the 'My Garmin/Custom Waypoint Symbols' folder on the computer and it has had no effect in BaseCamp. BaseCamp will use it if I name it as 008.bmp, but it does not affect the BaseCamp display for 'Unknown Cache'. I was trying to get my BaseCamp screen geocaching symbols to more closely resemble the device screen geocaching symbols. Is this possible or supported yet?
