Maps Show on Device

I have 1-24 topo from Garmins N/E 1-24 CD and Maine Topo from GPS File Depo on a micro sd card which I had in a Map 78s. I installed the card in my new Oregon 600 and these maps are all in one folder or at least that's what it looks like. Only two maps show on the device, WW Base map and in the other slot or folder these topo's. I swear when this card was in the 78s these topo's were all separate and could be turned on or off. Do I need to format and resend with different names or something? The folder in the device show's New England Topo-NY Topo 24k on one line and in much letters on the second line Topo US 24k Northeast but its all in one "folder".
  • When I open the Garmen folder there is one .img file called New England-NY topo 24K.img. These maps were loaded from Basecamp. Is there a way to separate these into individual .img files with different names? Maybe I should format the card and start over? The card is a 8GB. Is there room to load the entire N/E 24K Garmen CD. I din't it all but maybe its simpler that way?

    That's the problem.

You don't need to format the card. Delete the file. Use BaseCamp to install the first map. It will be in the Garmin directory and be named gmapsupp.img rename it but it must have a .img extinction. You could use Windows File Explorer or the tool that JaVaWa linked to in the other forum would be safer. Now use BaseCamp to load the second map. You can rename it if you would like.

    It should now work.
  • Some US topos consist of a large amount of map segments. I don't know whether this appies to your map or not, but if it does, you won't be able to use the map (the Oregon 600 has a limit of some 4000 map segments; on device and SD card combined). It's not something you can easily check with BaseCamp, but JaVaWa GMTK will tell you exactly how many map segments this map contains, and JaVaWa Device Manager counts the map segments already on the device.

There are two ways to load maps to an SD card: placed in the device or placed in a card reader. Using the latter is generally (much) faster, but the problem is that MapInstall (BaseCamp doesn't transfer maps itself; it calls MapInstall to do that) will put all maps into one file (gmapsupp.img). You could rename the file, but it can be tricky (MapInstall might delete it on the second run).
When the SD card is installed in the device MapInstall will take the capabilities of the device into account, and will place every map in a separate file (this is what you need with an Oregon 600).
There is a workaround when you want to use a card reader: copy the file GarminDevice.xml from the Oregon to the SD card (in the folder Garmin). MapInstall recognizes it as an Oregon, and will use separate files for every map.

First I want to thank all of you for your support. Being a kind of old fart and not tooo tecie I have to think about this stuff and do my best to get it all straight before I do anything. I deleted the one img file, went back to Basecamp and transfered the Maine Topo, then back in windows renamed it Maine Topo.img. Did the same thing with a portion of Garmins N/E 24k Topo(ME,NH,VT, northern part of MA and norther part of NY). In Windows I renamed it to N E 24k Topo.img. Inst. the card in my Oregon 600 and wala two separate maps I can turn on and off. Kool stuff, thank you, Tommy
