latest basecamp crashing

just got my garmin zumo 390 for Christmas
the basecamp software latest version I just downloaded, runs fine with the satnav not connected, but when I connect it or leave it connected the software shuts down .
anyone know why or a fix

laptop is running win 8.1 64bit

I have seen some comments elsewhere in here that Garmin recommends at least some Zumo models will work better (or only work?) with Mapsource rather than Basecamp. Of course they no longer support Mapsource and it lacks some features of Basecamp so I don't know if that's helpful. Or if your Zumo model is one of the ones affected.

That applies to the older zumos like the 550 and 660. MapSource can't even communicate with the newer zumos like the 350/390/590 (unless you change a special setting on the device) and it lacks certain features that BaseCamp has and that the newer zumos really need.
So MapSource won't be the solution...

I don't know why BaseCamp is crashing; can't help you with that.

as a work around for now, can I setup the journey in basecamp with the satnav not connected and save the file and import it to the zumo later?

Sure; save it to a GPX file and use Windows Explorer to put that file in the folder "GPX" on the zumo.

That applies to the older zumos like the 550 and 660.

BaseCamp works perfectly well with 550's, if my 550 is any indication.

You're right, it actually applies only to the 660 (and the nearly identical 665); that's the one that doesn't work well with BaseCamp. For the 550 and 220 it doesn't matter whether you use BaseCamp or MapSource, and the newer ones don't work well with MapSource.
Of course this complicates matters when you own old and new zumo's or when you create routes for several models, and this is aggravated by the fact that they don't use the same maps (NT and NTU maps are different). The best solution for those cases is not to use routes, but tracks instead. Tracks aren't map-dependent and all zumo's (except the 220...) will translate them to a proper route based on the map that is on the device.
