Feature request - Route / Track transfer

Hi;
I would like to propose the following feature:
After creating a route in BC (say, with only a beginning and an end point and letting BC do autorouting inbetween), I would like to have the optin to generate a track, which consists of the generated 'Route Directions' Points (See 2nd Tab of Route Window) - instead of the currently available option to generate a track, which consists out of equally distanced track points.

To me this feels like a natural / obvious feature(*) and I was nocking my brains out, since I thought it should be available already and I am just doing something wrong....

Pls let me know what you think.
Heiner

With this new feature, I would be sure that I can follow exactly the route I defined on the PC via outorouting - and I have the generated track condensed to the trackpoints, which signify turns and other relevant movement instructions
  • IYour device should faithfully follow the defined route unless it does an automatic recalculation

The older Oregons (200, 300 & 400) always recalculate a route, the newer ones won't.

I don't understand the need for a track with points only on route direction points (and I don't think it will ever be added to BaseCamp), but it is possible to accomplish this with JaVaWa RTWtool:

    • export the route from BaseCamp to a GDB file (important! This won't work with a GPX file)
    • load the GDB file in RTWtool
    • on the route options select "Export as" > "Waypoints", and "Modification" > "On direction points"
    • click "Convert" and cancel the file dialog (this way you don't have to create an intermediate file)
    • click "Recycle"
    • on the waypoint options select "Export as" > "Track"
    • click "Convert" and save it to either a GDB or GPX file

You need to decide what you want. You can already have a track. Routes are limited as mentioned. You cannot have track points in a route, your GPS doesn't work that way. So even IF Base Camp could do it there'd be no point.

With respect, you still don't understand what is being requested so your negative comments are not useful to the discussion.

For what it's worth, the request for a new option for how to generate a track from a route makes a bunch of sense, especially for those of us, like motorcyclists and bicyclists, who prefer to take the roads less travelled.

    Thank you, Ken!
I couldn't believe that I am the only one who would need such an option!
(And thank you also for understanding what I want - I felt rather stupid and frustrated getting the responses montioned)
Do you know by any chance to whom we can raise such a request?

  • Well the developers may chime in ...

In the meantime as JaVaWa posted above you could use his RTWtool.

    Hey, JaVaWa.
thank you so much for the instuctions - that worked and this gives me EXACTLY what I was looking for!!!
And thank you for creating that software - I assume that is you due to you forum name?

I used your JaVaWa Device Manager before, but the RTW tool not so far - looks great w/ a lot of options!
    Will look further into it.

All the best and thanks again!

Posting it in here is about as good as you'll get. Be aware that it's a rare enough use case that it might not get a lot of priority. I'm pretty sure that's what SUSSAMB was trying to prepare you for in his own way. JaVaWa makes some pretty magical software. I'm glad you read and tried his suggestion and it worked. So now you have a way to get it done.
