Internal Storage Vs Send to Device??

I'm a simple guy. I don't want to get lost in the woods. And I want to be able to clean up my tracks, replace excess wild zig zag track points with one single point (like when I stop to sit for a half hour when hunting), add/remove/rename waypoints, then send it all back to my Garmin 62stc so that I'll have a real clean version of tracks and routes the way I would find them pretty and useful.

My main question at this point is how to SYNC my basecamp with my GPS so that

1. Each time I come back from a hike/hunt, the new stuff on the GPS gets imported into Basecamp; then
2. After editing and cleaning everything (including even possibly a new tweak to an older hike), how to get it all back to the GPS

I'm not clueless... I see the "Send to Device" option but I also see "Internal Storage".

Isn't "Internal Storage" the DEVICE? Anyone understand the confusion here? Is there some difference between using the "Send to Device" option versus emptying "Internal Storage" then copying My Collection back into "Internal Storage"?

Or even if that doesn't work, can I still somehow easily delete everything off my Garmin GPS and THEN "Send to Device" "My Collection"?

Thank you!
ps. if anyone is wondering why I haven't just experimented with this its because I don't know enough to know that I wont be somehow losing all my stuff by accident if I experiment.
  • Internal storage is your device. So to do what you want copy everything from there into Basecamp. Delete everything off your device, edit the data in BC then send back to your device only the data you want. Note you can use 'Send to' or use 'drag and drop'.

    Thank you! But to be sure I understand... there is absolutely no difference between me using "Send to Device (My Collection)" and dragging and dropping "My Collection" into "Internal Storage"?

    Please humor my weary mind with a Yes or No, lol!!

    Also, if I use either of those methods but DO NOT clear out my GPS first... what will happen to all the edited files with dupe names? Will they copy over the old ones? Will I be prompted? Or will they automatically be renamed to "Old Filename (1)"?

    Thank you again!
  • Internal storage is your device.

    1. Assuming your 62STC does not currently have an SD card installed in the card slot, I can see how it might be confusing why "Internal Storage" is needed vs. just the device. But remember that if you insert an memory card in the device, then when you "send to", you will see both "Internal Storage" and "SD Card", or external storage, and you will have to choose where to put the data. That's why for all devices, the default device memory is called "Internal Storage".

    2. I'm not familiar with your device. But keep in mind that although you may have limited data now, and can use your whole "My Collection" on the device, as you add more data, you will likely end up not needing everything for a specific trip. For the deer hunt in Kentucky, you probably don't need your elk hunting tracks from Montana. So eventually you will organize your BC data in folders and lists. Many of us use the strategy that BC is our master data base of everything. We plan trips, routes, tracks, whatever, ahead of time for a specific trip, delete all previous data off the device, then "Send to" the device exactly what is needed for the upcoming trip. This gets away from any problems with overwritten/renamed items.
  • As posted above, once you build up your data it's best to organise it into Folders and lists. You can then be selective about what you send to your GPS, rather than simply sending 'My collection'.

    Ok, thanks for pointing out a potential misunderstanding I didn't even know about. Right now, there's no SD card. And, yes, I am a bit a*al about cleaning up and organizing my trips n waypoints etc. so I do already have them in lists in folders. I guess I was just sort of thinking of my gps as a backup in case anything ever happened to my laptop but I also use basecamp to make backups which I send to my dropbox folder so I guess I can live with one complete backup. ;)

    Ok, so assuming I do that, how do I wipe all previous data off the device? Because when I look in the GPX file, even if I delete contents of "internal storage", I see what I believe are old tracks in there... tracks I swore I loaded into basecamp and cleaned up. I went in and deleted some manually but there were other files in there that looked like the ones I just edited and loaded.

    So, how and when do I do the full wipe? I don't mean to sound as ignorant as I probably do. But my guess is this is how a list of steps would look...

    1. Import 62stc GPS into BC;
    2. Edit/Clean tracks n waypoints;
    3. Organize into folders/lists;
    4. Make new backup of BC;
    5. Delete all contents of GPS (how? manually?)
    6. Send only what I want to GPS either by SEND TO or "drag and drop"

    Is that list right?

    Thanks to you both again!
  • On a 62 you can delete everything via Basecamp. So Step 5 becomes:

    Select the Internal Storage of your 62 in the top left hand pane. Everything loaded to your 62 will now appear in the bottom left hand pane, just ensure you don't have any filters set. Now delete everything in the lower left hand pane.

    Just a point, while in Step 1 you can 'import' data into BC from your GPS rather than use the import function, just like in the 'delete' workflow above, you can drag and drop all the data in your 62 from the bottom left hand pane to the top left hand pane.
