BaseCamp 4.4.4 and Windows Media Player

BaseCamp 4.4.4, to my dismay, requires me to install Windows Media Player. I have another player installed and have up to now avoided WMP because of its reported intrusive behaviour, relatively large footprint and inability to play Blu-ray disks, not to mention the fact that my SSD is nearly full. Clicking on any media file opens my default player. Why cannot BaseCamp be written to behave in this way?

It has to do with the framework we use, however I will inquire about this. Thank you for the feedback.

I agree with walterono: I don't want to install Windows Media Player, for the same reasons.
Therefore I will not be able to install BaseCamp 4.4.4, too: sadly, because BaseCamp it is a very good software.
I strongly hope that future releases will not require some third party intrusive software.

I use Garmin Basecamp absolutely not to play media files, but I use it for making routes for my expensive Garmin GPS device, witch has no media playing use for me.
    Wrong business I should think.

So now I have to install a piece of media playing junk to do my routing??

Come on Garmin, think of the businesses you're in.
Please concentrate on the routing and searching problems in your GPS software, not multimedia rubbish
  • Like many others, I do not want wmp installed on my PC.
I'll have to continue using a previous version of BaseCamp then, hoping this can be adressed in the future.

    what intrusive behaviour is that?
used it for years and its only there when I start it up to play something, if I don't use it its not there and has never bothered me with "intrusive behaviour", as for not playing blu-ray, a simple codec update sorts that in like 2 minutes

    That's ok for you.
I do not get why you react here, snooping data from MS obviously does not bother you
Ignorance is common these days, but you are free to use WMP, no offense from my side.
But please leave other people the free choice of not want to connect to MS with their data, because thats what happening if you use WMP

Do not force us to use WMP, that's all all we ask.
We want to use Basecamp without being forced to use WMP

If you use WMP, it's fine with me, but do no try to intervene with the people who do not want to use WMP.

I have a simmilar problem tells me I need wmp version 11 or higher but I di have version 11 installed but still will not update
  • BaseCamp and MapInstall are calling home too.

I doubt BaseCamp needs Windows Media Player. It is probably a superfluous check performed by installer. If you unpack BaseCamp installer and execute BCMAIN.msi, then it will install without WMP request.
