Help for a new Basecamp user

My apologies if this is not the correct way to get information.

I am a long time user of Mapsource and it's Topo maps on cd disks.

Am attempting to convert my GPSmap 76CSx track file into a route from a recent trip down the Upper Missouri River Wild and Scenic area.

Doing research, I see the latest as of 26 November 2014 version of Basecamp is the way to go. So I down loaded Basecamp to my windows 8.1 up to date computer.

I also put my copy of Mapsource on my computer and it works.

I can load the Upper MO River track file into Mapsource and it will display the track but I cannot get it to convert to a route.

I can start up Basecamp and despite a lot of searching and looking I cannot make basecamp load my Mapsource Topo CD's maps load into Basecamp.

Can anyone point me to the proper posts on this forum or where I can find directions. This forums search function just has not worked for me, giving a ton of posts most of which do not cover what I am looking for.

Many thanks

Do you have these maps on a device already? If so connect the device and BaseCamp will find the map. Does this help you?
  • Can Mapsource see the maps, assuming you've installed them onto your PC? If so Basecamp should see them. They can be enabled by clicking on Maps in the toolbar and selecting them.

If the maps aren't installed then as pointed out Basecamp should read the map off your GPS. You may have to wait awhile for Basecamp to index the map ... you should see the map listed under your GPS in the top left hand pane with a green progress bar. When it completes the map will be available.

I still have the 1998 Topo USA CD's too. I can see them in BC. So first, did you ever figure out how to transfer the CD maps to your HD and get Mapsource to see them without the CD in the Drive?

If so, does your MapSource on the new computer see those maps? If it does not, you must edit the registry to change where MapSource is looking for those maps to the HD folder the same way you may have done originally. I have this information buried deep down in my files, but before I try to dig up the exact procedure I need those questions answered.

Once I got MapSource on my newer computer to see my old (copied) folders with the map segments in them, BaseCamp saw them also. I hope it's that simple for you too. (But I'm running Win7....I got my tablet running Win8.1 to see the maps also, but I used JaVaWa GMTK to transfer them from the Win7 laptop. I think they had to be working there first for that to work.)

It WAS a royal PITA! But if I can do it, so can you. It just takes a lot of time and careful attention to every detail.

I can start up Basecamp and despite a lot of searching and looking I cannot make basecamp load my Mapsource Topo CD's maps load into Basecamp.

BC doesn't support maps that require CD(s) to be inserted.

As AAARGH said the solution is to install such maps to your HD.

Can I load my US TOPO v.3.02 to my computer?

Yippee, I got instruction from Garmin support as to how to load my old but still work great USA TOPO garmin topo maps to my computer hard disk and can now get these maps to show on Basecamp.

Which is a good deal. and puts me one step closer to what I really want to do with base camp software.

In august I was in a group that floated the upper missouri river breaks river and I kept daily track logs on my Garmin GPSmap76CSx unit and loaded them to my computer from the GPS as a garmin file.

added the file to basecamp collection. I can show the file in basecamp but the file contains multiple tracks for each day's float. I cannot get basecamp to show all these track files together so I can produce a correct route of the trip from the actual tracks.

Do not know if basecamp can connect these multiple tracks into one file of the trip or not.

I appreciate this forum as a great tool to understand basecamp's operation.
  • Basecamp will join tracks together. Highlight the ones you want to join then right click and choose 'join selected tracks'.
