BaseCamp backup restore failure

Suddenly I can no longer restore BaseCamp from a previously saved backup file. This has always worked before and I use the backup/restore to move my information from computer to computer. So far I've tried 3 computers that have previously worked and get the same error message on all of them. Seems it may be related to newly updated BaseCamp software to ver 4.4.2?

Here's the error message I get:
Restore failed
The following problems occurred:
Access to the path:
'C:\Users\Charly|AppData\Roaming\Garmin\BaseCamp\' is denied

I have tried several different backup files and a newly created backup file with the same results.

Garmin is purely a puzzle when it comes to product abandonment.

I suspect nRoute, Mobile XT and Mobile PC were (or thought to be) affecting nuvi sales. Garmin after all is in the business of selling hardware (GPS units).

As for MapSource my guess is that the source code was a horrible mess that'd been "hacked" for a long time so they started over. That said the design philosophy of BaseCamp was an "interesting" development. As I'm sure you know it started out as a program for use with topo maps (only).

At some point it became the MapSource replacement.
  • ... I don't store anything personal online. If I did it'd be encrypted, by me, before uploading.

Of course anyone is free to "not care" and/or "I have nothing to hide" :)

Or they are equally free to make intelligent personal decisions about what to store online and how to store it.

For what it's worth, the services where those celebrity photos were stored were not hacked. It was the personal accounts of the individuals. That's quite a different thing. And I thought it was social networking sites, not cloud data storage?

Of course storing nude photos of yourself online is probably not a really intelligent personal decision. But in my case, anyone who wants to look at a nude photo of me gets exactly what they deserve!

At some point it [Basecamp] became the MapSource replacement.

No, it never did (become a Mapsource replacement). I seem to recall Falagar and others stating that Basecamp was never intended as a Mapsource replacement when they were asked about leaving out features and functions or taking totally different approaches to things that already worked well. Witness discussions about "File" versus "Database", Categories as Waypoint properties, and a host of other stuff.

It certainly still remains the case that Basecamp is not a Mapsource replacement. Ask anyone with a certain vintage of Zumo, or who wants reliable and complete search functions, or who uses categories to organize their waypoints, or who wants to experiment with different variations of a route without clutter and cross-contamination, or....

That's not a judgement of which app is better. That judgement can't be made because it's like comparing apples and bowling balls. It's just a factual observation: Basecamp is not a Mapsource replacement. And likely never will be.

For the record, I'm not a Basecamp hater. What I hate is the fact that Garmin has abandoned Mapsource without creating a replacement for it. I suspect that is the case for almost everyone who slams Basecamp. They don't hate Basecamp; they just hate that it doesn't replace Mapsource and are afraid that at some point Mapsource will cease to work for them. Since Basecamp is the only alternative, and it's not a direct replacement for everything that Mapsource does, it takes the hits.

That's unfortunate for the Basecamp developers because creating a Mapsource replacement was, apparently, never their mandate.

Well I meant "replacement" not in the sense of functionality but in what Garmin recommends to users.

Garmin doesn't readily admit to MapSource, WebUpdater or GarminMapUpdater. Instead they promote BaseCamp and Garmin Express. The former programs, for the most part, "just work". The latter ones sometimes "have issues".

Many users assume newer is better for both software and hardware (GPS units). My experience is different :)

Understood. "Garmin's suggested alternative" or simply "alternative" might be a better description.

    Exactly.

I resemble that remark. :) We should remember that change is not always progress.

Just keep in mind the Microsoft Office update philosophy -- "Everything's different and nothing is better."
