BaseCamp backup restore failure

Is that really a '|' between 'Charly' and 'AppData'? If so, does replacing it with a '\' fix the problem?

No, that's just a typo in my transcription of the error message.

1. Are you sure that BC is closed and not running. I would reboot the computer and make sure BC is closed and try again.

2. Try to restore to a different location. If you can, you will know your backup is good. Then you can always (?) simply copy (replace) from the new location to the old location.

3. Try deleting 'C:\Users\Charly\AppData\Roaming\Garmin\BaseCamp\'. If you can delete, then do a restore.

Appears that BC update to 4.4.4 has solved the issue for me so there must have been something with 4.4.2 that wasn't happy on my computers.

SUSSAMB - I agree that backup/restore is a slow way of moving things around but it's the only way I've found to maintain separate BC "files" for my various collections. When I first started with BC I tried having everything all together at once in My Collection but it was just too cumbersome to deal with all the Lists and List folders I needed to keep my stuff organized. Am i missing a concept here somewhere? BTW - Is the database folder you refer to the following?

Or you could put a copy in the cloud, eg. MS OneDrive or similar, and set them to automatically sync to as many PCs as you like.

I'm not sure how that feature works in Google Drive, DropBox or Box or if they all have it, but it's pretty simple to use in OneDrive. I use it for a variety of things.

Disclaimer: I don't use if for Basecamp database files because I still mostly use Maps.... ummm... That-Other-Garmin-Planning-Program. :)

Like SUSSAMB I manually sync data (of all kinds) between PC's. As some Hollywood celebrities have found out storing stuff in "the cloud" isn't always secure. I'm sure many don't consider their BC database to be "personal" but I bet many would be amazed how much data can be extracted/extrapolated.

I don't store anything personal online. If I did it'd be encrypted, by me, before uploading.

Of course anyone is free to "not care" and/or "I have nothing to hide" :)

Garmin is purely a puzzle when it comes to product abandonment. They build some truly wizard apps. Then they walk away from them, start over from scratch .... and make a terrible mess.

You spoke about Dementia and Alzheimers in the above mentioned thread. That's about the only explanation I can think of for Garmin's longer term approach to software development; corporate Dementia.

Abandoned: Mobile XT (Excellent; basically a Nuvi in your phone) --> Replacement: StreetPilot (definitely not a Nuvi), Viago (total disaster)

Abandoned: Mapsource (Solid and mature; loaded with useful features and functions) --> Replacement: Basecamp (sort of a wash -- some neat new stuff but bent, broke or left out some seriously useful features and functions)

Abandoned: nRoute (mobile nav for your laptop) --> Replacement: Mobile PC (Excellent start but abandoned before they got the bugs out)

Abandoned: Mobile PC (Excellent but buggy; a Nuvi in your laptop or tablet) --> Replacement: Nothing

It's interesting to note that there are still a lot of people using Mapsource, Mobile PC and even nRoute.
