BaseCamp fixes requests

Hi,

Firstly, standard Windows cut n paste keys

cut Shift-Delete
copy CTRL-Insert
paste Shift-Insert

Can we have these operational please.

Secondly, live data from GPS device. MapSource did it and I wish BC did - or have I just not found it ?

Thirdly - file handling...

Open and save file options are missing. Import/Export easily leads to file cross-contamination and things have to be regularly deleted from BC as it appears to just keep on collecting 'clutter'.

Fourthly - a carry-over from MS - track handling... (or was it Google maps ??)

When working on a portion of a track, BC sometimes jumps back to the beginning of the track - meaning WORK to return to where you were:
Show track
Select zoom tool
Select track portion
Select not zoom tool (this step is really annoying)
R-click track to view trackpoint details.

I'll come back with more issues as I find them !

Mike.

By the way, what is the purpose for using the zoom tool in this case? The scroll-wheel will zoom for you as well.

I hadn't thought of the 'scroll wheel' - basically because this touchpad hasn't got one ;) I even had to get an updated driver (beta version) for the touchpad to effect edge scrolling - so I do have that. I have now tried that on the map and have found it zooms very quickly - well, far too quickly for the settings I find 'about right' for all the other apps I use vertical scrolling for. So can I ask for a 'zoom speed' adjustment in the general settings list ? (Yes, scrolling this web page works just great with the touchpad's edge scrolling - so it is an acceleration setting needed within BC to reduce the speed for map zooming.)

    Thanks.

    Mike.

Basically so BaseCamp can be used as the map display while mobile.

BaseCamp doesn't have such a mode. In fact no current Garmin software can do that.

On MS, in the left pane are several tabs including 'Maps', 'Tracks', 'Routes', 'Waypoints' and 'GPS' - in which one can click on "Start tracking" allowing MS to receive live data from the GPS (possibly aka 'streamed data').

That feature was removed from MS after v6.5 (i.e. v6.5 was the last to have it). v6.5 is dated Dec 27th 2004--almost 10 years ago.

Changes made from version 6.5 to 6.7:

Removed real-time tracking from MapSource. Use nRoute for PC real-time tracking applications.

BTW nRoute has been and gone as well.

    I have MS V6 - and I'm sticking to it :)

Well, can't complain as it'll happily run on Win 98SE :) (but sadly, not DOS :)) )

    MapSource Version Information (historical)
  • It'd be nice to see in the r-click DD menu for that file options to 'save', 'save and close' or to 'abort edits'.

I believe what you want can already be accomplished by different means. Save would of course be do nothing. Abort in your example would be right-click on the new list and chose Remove and Delete Unique Content. Saving an object(s) to the unlisted folder would be selecting the object(s) right clicking and choosing Remove from “list name”. This will only work for an object that does not already appear in another list (keep reading).

Here's my brief unsubstantiated view of the undocumented logic behind this new interface. It may help you avoid some pitfalls as you adat to this new application. The primary function of lists is for organizing and cross referencing data, with emphasis on the latter. For this reason, drag and drop within BaseCamp is not a “move operation” it is a quicker means of performing a copy and paste.

The Unlisted folder was added to BaseCamp as a means for users to find data that had fallen thru the cracks. Objects that are in the database but do not appear in any list. Hopefully you now understand why Drag and Drop to Unlisted folder did not work and why Removing from a list will sometimes place an object in the Unlisted folder.

Also, lists do not contain objects they contain references to objects in the database. So copy/paste, drag/drop are duplicating a reference to the same database object. For the purposes of changing and keeping an original object, the object will have to be duplicated first. Duplication creates a new object in the database containing the same information (except Name) as the original.

Additional adds to some of your questions/suggestions. The selection tool (Arrow icon, hold down left mouse button and drag) will create a box and select contiguous points within a selected track. By that I mean only the start and end points need by with the selection box. Zooming in/out can be accomplished with +/- keys in addition to the Zoom tool and mouse wheel. Steps are fixed and are the same as the mouse wheel.

I will see what I can make traction on. Glad we found something of a solution for you at least to start with.

If I can find where the database file is stored, I could at least get Windows to delete it every time I boot the computer. That would stop the gathering of clutter within the db.

Please be cautioned that altering the DB may have unintended side effects from within BaseCamp. Back up things before altering them.

I'll be happy just to get copy and paste into BC. When I'm setting up our spring through fall trip in the RV that is some where around 500 way points so I still use Mapsource because copy and paste is so much less labor intensive and no typo's, very bad for lat/long. For CG's I use the name, the lat/long and driving directions plus add the url.
