Unusual problem with favorites.

I work as a delivery driver for a major online grosery delivery service.

Here in Ireland we dont use postcode (Yet) and I have been saving all my hard to find rural customer addresses on my favorites on my trusty Nuvi50. nearly 400 of them to date.

To help other drivers find the same place again I asked the manager to purchase twelve more Garmin Nuvi52 satnavs, which I brought home, updated and using copy and paste I transferred the GPX fav files from my own device to the other new 12 Garmins.

Great. Works fine. But it occurred to me I could go one better.

Now we have 13 Garmin satnavs roaming the countryside at any one time with or fleet of vans. Everyone saving hard to reach places as they go.

So I basically have 13 nuvi's with new favorites added to my original list and saved. The favorite GPX files are now different for each device.

How would I collect the gpx data of all 13 devices and sort out the data. Finding the new favorites on each device, save them and add them to the rest.

I know I can view all the GPX jargon via MS NOTE on my computer. Is there a program that will list differences of the file so I can compare them to find the new favs ?
Kind of hard to explain what I want to do. I want to create a data base at home with all the difficult address .

This is not sponsored in any way by my company. I am just trying to take the frustration out of the job for my colleges.
  • Download Garmin's Basecamp program from here http://www.garmin.com/en-GB/shop/downloads/basecamp

It will allow you to import and export data from/to your nuvis.

Hi. Thanks. I have downloaded it now and saved the favs from my own nuvi onto it.

How do I combine all the favs from each device sorting the existing from the new from all the devices?

I was thinking that if I simply saved all waypoints from all devices, I would end up with lots of duplicates in my favs list.

For instance, I may have 12 listing for Jane Browns home.

  • Well you will need to do some editing/pruning to keep the database 'neat' but trying to combine 13 satnavs so they all use the same database is going to need a little effort. If it were me I'd start by creating separate lists for each satnav, and work from there.

Spotting duplicates should be easy though as Basecamp doesn't allow it, so you'd end up with Jane Brown, Jane Brown1, Jane Brown2 etc ...

Thanks so much. Just one more question.

As you probably know the navteq maps dont show everything. We have apartment blocks that will not show up on the search .

For instance, The address may be apartment 300 . The Oaks Apartment complex, Sandyford, Dublin 16.

Garmin will get me to Sandyford, Dublin. But it will not list nearly all apartment block names as they are recent or private developments.

Thankfully Google maps on my phone will list things very accurately and is a great back up as long as I have a moblie internet connection.

Is there anyway I can add place names to my basic map so my garmin will find them in the "search all" function when finding addresses?

My device is not capable of finding them when in the favorites file.

    Sorry for all the questions.
  • If they're in favourites as Appt 300 (for example) then a search of favourites will find it, but only once you've put the address in there.
