Basecamp can't find... real coordinates...

This really sounds odd to me as the entire GPS system is built around lat / long coordinates BUT ... ( No offense to my UTM friends)... BUT how do to "Find" a location using only Lat / Long in Basecamp? (or Mapsource). The dialogue box seems to want to center the map there. I don't. I just want to locate several points using lat / long. Especially when I pulling / plotting a series of coordinates on a topo map the other options of "address", "intersections" and "POI's" etc... are useless / not helpful.

    Greetings SUSSAMB,

Thank you for you considered reply. The method you mention is the only method I found to work also. The purpose of my email was (to clarify) that the `Find` menu command lists 6 initial options with `Find/Locate Coordinates' (or Ctrl + T) as yet another option and last option. This last option does not follow the same paradigm as the first 6. At least the first six present a 'Find' search panel which give clues as to how to navigate the search function. The Ctrl + T presents with a completely different interface box asking the question 'Center at:', leaving the user wondering why they need to re-center their map to locate a waypoint, (in addition to the function of creating a waypoint. At best this in not a consistent and user friendly approach.

Further with respect to the first six options the two items 'Addresses' and 'Intersections' present a somewhat useful database field search, which would be more useful if one additional field "Find Coordinates" field were posted there. In the case I initially described I want to know where places are on a map, without necessarily turning everyone of them into a hard waypoint. (That comes later). But ca la vie.

This tells me that BaseCamp is still suffering from design issues, which I assume can be addressed in another thread.

Again I thank you for your speedy replay.

    Cheers
    KJC

PS Since you seem to be a moderator... I would like to know how the make changes to my "Profile Name". When I first created the name I did so by clacking random keys on the keyboard as my first 4 choices seem to be taken. Now that I know what will work I'd like to change it.

    Thanks again
  • Find and Locate Coordinates serve two different purposes. The Find option is for searching locations already stored in a database (things like Points of Interest, Cities, Streets etc.).

Locate Coordinates does exactly what is says if finds any coordinate on the map. Enter a coordinate and either center it on the map if that is the area that you wish to examine (or look for user data) or create a Waypoint at the location if you wish to mark and save it.

Find can also be used to search saved user objects (tracks, waypoints etc.). The search will be limited to the chosen folder/list in the upper left pane (select My Collection if you want to search everything you have saved). Like the other Find options, this is a Name search, not a Coordinate search.

In v4.2.5 this search is done by bringing up the Find Options (ctrl+alt+f), select User Data and enter a search term in the box next to the magnifying glass in the upper right, not in the space below Location then search. At least in v4.2.5 it does not work in the location box, although this may have been fixed in newer versions.

The search will find the term if it is part of the object’s name, in the object’s description/notes or a point within a route regardless of the routes name.
