Zoom Control

BaseCamp 4.4.2, Windows 8.1, U.S. map

I've created many routes. I'm no Pro, but I think I have the basics down.

I want finer control when I zoom with my wheel mouse. If I zoom in 1 click/detent with the wheel, it's a relatively giant step in.

The reason is I'd like to be able to size the E/W or N/S boundaries of a route to fit in the map pane. The zoom seems very course. I've tried the magnifying glass also. Exact same results as using the wheel on the mouse.

I've looked in Edit\Options and don't see a way to adjust it. I've tried <Shift>, <Ctrl> and <Alt> while rolling the mouse wheel -- no effect on behavior.

Is there somewhere in the BaseCamp application to control the zoom granularity?

Thanks in advance.
  • I'm not aware of anything. But if you right-click on the route and select "show route" it will resize and pan the window automatically to show the full route just inside the boundaries. If you select multiple routes, or a list or folder, it will do the same.

...also, if you use the zoom tool to draw a rectangle around any area, it will zoom/pan to show exactly that regardless of zoom granularity.

First, thanks (!) for the fast response. Wow. Appreciated. I've tried your suggestions.

I clicked on the route in the mapview pane. Then <right click>ed on it. I get a popup menu with (it's long):

Open | Playback | Send To...
Delete | Remove from XYZZY | Split Route Here | Insert Into Route
Invert Route | Optimize Route | Recalculate Selected Route(s) | Remove Shaping Points | Create Track from Selected Route
Begin Measurement | Begin Route | Begin Track
Find Nearest Places | Create BirdsEye Imagery... | Report Map Error

So, "show route" isn't there. I went to the upper left "Library" pane and under "My Collections" I selected the route. <Right Clicked> and chose "Show on Map" (first option). There's at least 2" of space between the furthest E/W point and the border. Same for N/S. So, this gets a "nope".

I used the zoom tool (magnifying glass, correct?) and then selected around the route to cut it close to the most N/S/E/W point and released. It centered the map (a small bit) from the previous step ("Show on Map"), but that's it. Still several inches from the border on any cardinal direction.

Unless I didn't follow your directions / suggestions correctly, it doesn't seem to do it. But, I appreciate your thinking about it and offering the suggestions.

Oh -- I went to Library and under My Collections tried to select multiple routes. I can't. I use <ctrl><select> and <shift><select> like you'd do in Windows Explorer for files. It would not select multiple files/routes. Maybe I have an option set wrong?
  • Well, one way I guess would be to use the zoom tool to draw a rectangle slightly smaller than the area you want fully displayed, then they would be closer to the edge. With a little practice, I think you could get very close quickly.

For selecting, there are two data panes, upper and lower. The upper one generally (always?) shows only folders and lists, you shouldn't be able to see any routes directly there. You can't select more than one item at a time in that upper pane, although you can show multiple lists by putting them into one folder and then selecting that folder, but you're still in that case selecting just one item, the folder. When you have a list or folder selected in that pane, the items contained in that list or folder are listed in the lower pane. That's where you select routes. And there you can select more than one using the familiar shift and ctrl click techniques.

    I just upgraded to 4.4.4.

When I right click on the route, I have "Show on Map", not "Show Route".

It does show the route, but there's a large gap between the N/S/E/W-most points on the route and the edge of the window. Like... inches.

I have tried using the zoom tool and select just inside, or just outside, of the route. Doesn't seem to work. It seems as if the zoom in/out is VERY course control. You can't finesse or fine-tune the zoom at all.

Same with drawing the rectangle. After drawing one it just jumps to a very course approximation of the route. Disappointing.
  • I'm not seeing that, works perfectly fine on my 4.4.4

Thanks for trying / responding. Maybe my expectations are wrong?

I've included a route/map (Map 1.JPG). Also included is the map after I zoomed in 1 mouse wheel detent (Map 2.JPG).

Down in the lower right of the screen is the mileage scale. I just noticed that as I roll the mouse wheel (zoom) in, the change the mileage scale shows:

    50 mi, 30 mi, 20, 15, 10, 7.5, 5, 3, 2, 1.5mi.... Those scalings appear to be fixed you can't get finer/smoother than that. For example if I wanted to go from 3 miles to 2.9, 2,8, 2.7 -- I can't do it. It's straight to 2 miles.

If there is a way to change that, I haven't found it. I tried using <Ctrl>, <Shift> and <Alt> when I scrolled and that doesn't seem to "be the trick".

So, I think I've beat this horse dead. I appreciate the reviews and responses. I'll change how I think about it. Thanks again.

    &quot;Show on Map&quot; is useless

In BaseCamp 4.4.4, I want to locate the tracks in the received data. "Show on Map" is the top selection on the (right-click) context menu. When I select it, the map zooms out to the entire world. Well, duh, I already knew what planet I was on. From there, if I want to find the track on the map, I basically have to already know where it is already. Such is the functionality in MapSource; why does it not work the same in BaseCamp? Is there a setting I am missing (I've looked)?
    Thanks.

    Maybe asking wrong question for &quot;Show on Map&quot;

On the data received from device, maybe I am doing that wrong. I am getting a mess of everything, including tracks, waypoints, and routes. Is there a way to sort this out within BaseCamp 4.4.4? Also, I really don't want truncated waypoint names being received from the device.
  • If you import data from your device it will appear in one list. Within Basecamp you can create folders and lists and drag/drop data into them.

Basecamp is different to MapSource so takes a bit of time to master if you expect it to work like MapSource does. There are videos etc under the Help button on the toolbar.
