TOPO UK & Ireland not showing in Basecamp

Sorry but I posted this in the wrong forum so here it is again with an image..
I have recently bought a Garmin 600 and on my pc I have Basecamp and have downloaded a Birdeye map of my area.
When my Garmin is connected I can see I have a choice of Gobal map and TOPO UK map. I have TOPO UK selected because it gives more detail. However when I disconnect the Garmin the TOPO UK map is not available rather disapointingly. How do I make it available when the Garmin device is not connected?
See attachment

  • The simplest way, and potentially the only way depending on where you got the TOPO map from, is to copy the map file to a USB stick or sd card. Create a folder on the stick/card named Garmin and put the map file in there. Basecamp will then read it from the stick/card.

    Hi,
Thanks for the advice. It seem to me that Basecamp is programmed to read from internal memory of the Garmin device. I have followed your advice and copied everything from both internal cards of the device onto a memory card. I have gradually deleted what I considered unnecessary files which caused no observable change in Basecamp . Now I have the same functionality as if the device was attached. Still it is a pity that I have to insert the memory card each time I use Basecamp.
  • That's not so. Basecamp will read both from the device and any card inserted ... I have various devices and that's how they work.

You don't have to insert the memory card each time you use Basecamp, you could connect the device, but Basecamp has to read the map from somewhere. That's not true of all maps, some can be installed on your PC, but is almost certainly true of the topo one you mention. However you haven't explained where you got it from and so it may be possible to install it onto your PC. Where did the map come from?

BTW I'm unclear why you were deleting 'unnecessary files' ... all you need on the card/stick for BC to read the map is the map file(s) in a folder named Garmin, as I originally posted.

    Hi,
On my pc when the Garmin device is connected, or a memory card is inserted in the pc, and Basecamp is started, (or the other way around), Basecamp detects the device, or the inserted memory card and loads the maps from either. I understand what you are saying. What I would like, would be for Basecamp to start showing all of the maps without the device being attached or a memory card inserted.
I assumed that in Basecamp >Device>Receive from device, would have achieved this, and then Basecamp could read the maps from there.

As you say, only the contents of the Garmin folder are necessary, so after copying all of the files from the internal and additional memory in the device, I deleted the unnecessary additional files so leaving just the Garmin folder. Files such as ld.txt, autorun.inf, volumeicons.icns, help, text folders, and anything else that did not stop the functionality. Just to save space on the card.

Where did the TOPO uk& Ireland come from? I don't know. Might have already been on the device when I bought it of may have been installed with the download of Basecamp. I definitely did not intentionally install it!
  • Basecamp isn't 'loading' the maps, it's simply indexing them. For Basecamp to be able to use maps without a device attached they need to be installed on the PC. Some map makers provide an installer for this, but without an installer file it can't be done.

I suspect your map was already on your device, so the only way for you is to use the stick/card method I outlined.

Receive from device doesn't apply to maps but to data.

Thanks for the clarification. I will continue with the memory card option
  • Ok. Since the issue seems resolved I'll close this thread.
